CLR is fine but not sure that I'd use a wire brush (or any abrasive) on a s/s HX.

I used CLR with very good results and a little elbow grease with a stainless wire brush followed with plain water to rinse out HX.0 -
CLR
is the recommended agent for cleaning the Munchies. It is what we use as well.

Metal brushes
wear the metal. Simple as that.0 -
Is the cleaning of the HX recommend on all units as part of a maitenance schedule? Mine unit is nat gas.0 -
For the munchies I would say yes0 -
Recommended cleaning
Use CLR and nylon brush, no steel or brass brushes as far as I was told. Good luck, every year and yes wash out to clear the small condensate trap. Tim0 -
Ditto Joe
You HAVE to keep ALL combustion appliances clean. Doesn't matter what the fuel is.
Every year, have it cleaned.

Cleanleness is important. But the other reason is the metal will develop stress cracks, that look sort of like corrosion, where any forign material gets stuck. Not that anyone would, but if you were to draw a line inside the heatexchanger with a pencil that's where the stress will build up and thats where it will fail. Thats why plastic brushes only, and watch out that the metal middle dosen't scratch the SS. Come on reps, tell me I don't know what I'm talking about this time! Just one of the reasons when they suggested cleaning off melted parts with CLR didn't work, wouldn't dissolve with CLR, they became very defensive.0 -
CLR + Credit Card
We use CLR, ONLY nylon brushes, no metal or brass!!! We then take an old credit card, cut it at a 45, and use the sharp ends to break out the condensate crud between the HX coil gaps, particularly at the bottom half of the coil.
The credit card trick works better than any brush, and will make the cleaning last longer. The gap crud is what usually causes the chamber to flood, and can easily block the cond. drain.

If they are not dirty
they don't need a cleaning I was surprised how clean my Knight was after a years service. It didn't need a brushing.
I've seen and have others that need a twice a year cleaning.
I think a lot has to do with the air they breath.
, also
Pet supply shops have a good selection of nylon brushes for cleaning.
