How does one properly clean a boiler and it's piping?

I'm a contractor; I've only cleaned a couple of residential boiler piping systems: radiant and baseboard. Apart from using the correct chemicals to the correct type of boiler, what would be the proper procedure?
Starting with where in the system is best to hook up the jet pump to empty the system? And where to fill the boiler system with the restoring / protecting chemicals. What to isolate. What pumps in the system to run , turning up the thermostats, and turning the boiler's gas valve to the pilot position.
