lochinvar with tn4

Paul,
This is going to be a zoned circ setup, on an old cast iron hi mass system. It was converted from gravity probably 40 years ago or more. Should work fine. Any control problems with the lo/hi/lo fire circuit board at all? Thanks again.

  • how to pipe indirect

I have seen a few installs recently with multiple knight boilers and the tn4 controls. I have a new install coming up and the question that i have is this, How should i pipe the indirect? should i pipe it according to lochinvar specs or pull it off the secondary loop and put it on priority?
It would be nice to utilize both boilers to speed up the recovery of the hot water system, but i want to know what the best possible solution is?

    Depends....

On your control strategy and setup.

Normally, with a single boiler, I would pipe it as a parallel loop directly off of the boiler. With the TN4, if you set up the DHW on priority, the TN4 will drop of the space heating call until the DHW satisfies. How do you intend to control space heating?

Is this a standard primary loop? Parallel primary? Using a Caleffi Hydrolink or Hydro-separator? There a several ways to accomodate DHW with tekmar and the Knight. Can you give us some more info as in high temp, low temp, circulators, zone valves, radiators, infloor, fan-coils??...

EDIT: Another factor: what is the smallest load and is it larger than the lowest firing rate of the Knight boiler? If it is not, I would definately consider a buffer tank which further changes things.

    Lochinvar CBN-135 Solution Series

    Paul,
I getting ready to install a CBN-135 Solution series. have you had good luck with them? I know that you have mentioned that you have installed them for customers before.Any feedback? Thanks in advance.

    Yes

Definite primary secondary piping. Flow through the HX is key. Make sure the pump is sized accurately. Flow-switch is always a good idea with low-mass boilers.

Even with 2-stage controls on the Solution, good long run times are best for optimum efficiency.

    No problems

to speak of. I did have one solution that had an internal pump relay fail. I just hard wired it for constant run.

High mass system is ideal for a reset temp. Any chance you will consider a tekmar 361 or Uponor Promix 201 for variable-speed injection-mixing? This will provide a full reset temp to the rads and give you a solid platform for providing minimum inlet temps so that you have no sustained flue gas condensation issues. Money well spent now-adays.

  • temps and zones

paul, there are 20 radiant zones running from 6 different mixed temps and there are 5 hydro zones that will be running 140 degree temps. The domestic load is a 119 indirect with a 119 storage tank. I would like two boilers to go on priority when the domestic calls. This house has 12 bathrooms. We are useing 4 kbn 285's for the heating and domestic load. I was not able to put a low loss header on this one due to bugetary constraints so we will be doing primary secondary.
I have gotten many mixed views on piping the domestic so i am looking for the best way and also the easiest way to acheive unlimited hot water for the home.

That's a lot of mix temps

what are you using for mixing controls?

I like tekmar controls, but with 4 Knights, I would use the internal sequencer for staging modulation as well as the rotation? Is the heat loss accurate for the Million BTU's?

I would love to hear more about this system.

    Budgetary constraints!

After re-reading, 20 zones, 6 mix temps and you have budgetary contraints. To me, the Caleffi Hydro-separator will pay for itself in terms of simplifying the boiler piping alone.

Let me pencil something on visio.

  • tekmar mixing stations

we had to negotiate price several times to get this project so i am counting my pennies in this mechanical room. The house is a little under 16,000 sqft and we have about 5000 sqft of snow melt and that includes the roof.
the heat loss was done properly, most of the load is going to the snow melt.
i am using all tekmar mixing stations with actuators.I wish icould use a callefi hydo seperator but we are over budget on the chilled water so i had to make some changes. The worst part is i have to solder all the 3" copper. I was hoping to use my propress for this one.

    Understood

Are you using a HX for the snowmelt? Tekmar mixing stations as in TN4? What TN4 did you have in mind?

Edit: Have you spoken to Mike Miller at tekmar? He is truly gifted at controls.

  • yes

i am using a heat exchanger for the snow melt and a four way miving valve. We are still finalizing what controls configuration to use there is two stages of heating and one stage cooling. We are also using arzell zone dampers to make it even more complicated. I will post photos soon
