    Didn't get good news today

The day after Thanksgiving my nephew, Peter DeKam, was diagnosed with a tumor in his brain. He had been having headaches for a month or so and the day before Thanksgiving he became nauseous and his vision was blurry. Bruce and Mary (Mary is my sister) took him in to the local hospital and after a scan, they sent him right down to Grand Rapids where they did surgery this Wednesday. The surgeons couldn't get all of the tumor due to it being wrapped around the optic nerve and the pathology report came back today that it is a malignant type.

So, Bruce and Mary and Pete, who is 22, are faced with no good options. It's basically untreatable without some really serious consequences like blindness and paralysis of his left side. The other option is to wait and let it run its course, hoping that something will become available to treat it. It is a very slow growing type of cancer from what they have been told although not all the facts are known yet.

This is the worst nightmare of every parent and I ask that you guys pray for healing in Pete and wisdom for Bruce and Mary as they help him make decisions about what to do from here on out. Our family's are very close and it hit my son Matthew very hard. Pete and Matt grew up living across the street from each other and did a lot together when they were young. When you're in your 20's you never think about just having a little time left. It looks like a tough road ahead.

    How horrible! Done.
  • Steve

They most certainly will be in our thoughts and prayers. Lynn and I also have a 22 year old son and I can't even imagine what we would do or how we would feel if this happened to us. We have lost way too many loved ones to this disease. I wish you and your family the strength and faith that it takes to get through this.

    Sad to hear

Especially at such a young age.

I lost my Dad to a tumor 2 years ago. He was a VERY young 70, a retired electrician(Union, Local 25 in NY)

He was active and mowed the lawn the day he was diagnosed, July 1.

Unfortunately we buried him on October 5th, after some experemental treatment at Sloan Kettering in NY. His was inoperable because of its location.

Looking back, we felt he may have had it for at least 10 years, since we had noticed some changes in his behavior that was out of character(not bad, just not his usual)

    Brain Tumors are tragic.

The good news is a lot of people do very well with them, ofter for long periods of time. There are over 130 different types, based on location and type of cancer.

I hope your nephew gets by this, it is not fair for someone so young to go through something so difficult.

My oldest son is afraid of the dark. He asked me what scares me. I told him that something will happen to him or his brother.

You are in my thoughts and hopes for a good conclusion to this.

    You got it Steve...............................

Terrible news, but now is the time to regroup and fight like hell! The cutting edge and experimental treatments will probably be the way to go. Sloan-Kettering in NYC might be the place for him. He's got two things going for him: Youth; the love and support of family, us friends, and God. I will add him in to my prayers and will not stop till he is in remission. Mad Dog

    Hi Steve

I'll never forget the way you reached out to me years ago when things weren't so good in my life.

And when I read this thread yesterday it seemed to make everything else stop. To me there is nothing more painful than to watch a child suffer.

Fear of something happening to my girls consumed me for a long time. Through the grace of God many of my fears have been replaced with Faith.

    Have Faith my friend.

    Steve

    Oh...

    my God Steve.

Little in life is as terrible as having options that are "bad" and "worse."

There is never a good time for stuff like this to happen. The holiday season however, seems to magnify the sadness.

Assume the worst, hope for the best.

    Prayers for help

Exchanging prayers for the cure is easy to do, Steve, you can count on me. What must be so totally incomprehensible is to get around an answer for why, why Peter and why in his prime youth. I don’t understand it at all, but I will pray for all of you having to deal with this test of strength. For family strength.

    Strongest wishes.

    Prayers for Pete

It is always an awful thing when someone is diagnosed with cancer. It is always that much worse when it is someone young. My prayers go out for your nephew and all of his family. May God grant you all the strength to fight this!

My eyes got misty just reading it. It hits too close to home, when you can't do anything to protect your kid. You got my prayers for sure. WW

This is a terrible development for your family. Keep the faith, but check out some of the alternatives like Mad Dog suggested. You have our prayers & good thoughts.
