Indirect choice - Buderus or Weil

Steve, don't use anything but the WM....can't comment on them. I do know that the WM has a lifetime warranty that they DO honor!!!Only ever had to replace one and that was hooked up bassackwards by some moron that ran the boiler in the top and the domestic water in the sides... they still replaced it and I told them what happened.

    Which indirect?

I have been quoted a Buderus ST140 and a Weil McLain Gold Plus 60 at the same price. I was interested in stainless steel but I have city water and don't know if the chlorine will be a problem with the stainless. Is the coating on the Buderus reliable?

What is the best choice for long life? How long do indirects last compared to standalone HW heaters?

    Thanks,
    Steve

    buderus

I have been using buderus tanks for about 7 to 10 years and have yet had one fail but they are properly installed with a portable expansion tank which is pressurized to house pressure as for over priced i pay very little more for the bud4rus tank compared to any other plus all the pipe tapping are located in the rear and it is equipted with a removable top clean out for easy cleaning and comes with the water inlet and outlet tees i believe in them so much that i just finished installing one in my own home peace and good luck clammy

    ... or

consider buying the Smart 60 from Triangle-Tube, since they're the ones manufacturing the Gold tanks for Weil McLain. It may or may not be less expensive to get the same product, worth a try?

Check out a Turbomax indirect, it works a little different.

    Food for thought...

The construction of the Buderus is excellent however if you do decide to get one note the following. It needs to be plugged into an electrical outlet, it will have an anode tube that will need replacement at some interval and Buderus recommends that the tank be opened and cleaned at least every two years.

    Tough Question

There are WM people and then there's Buderus people, they are usually not one in the same.

We have sold too many to count Triangle Tube Smart Series and Buderus Indirects. Their failure rates are virtually nonexistant. A bad experience for a contractor can result in the " Brand X is junk and I will never install another" Then they tell it on the mountain to all who will listen.

Please read the maintenance info provided with tanks.

The WM Indirect is made by Triangle Tube, we saw this first hand in New Jersey at the factory. And the funny part is Phase III Smart Series is usually cheaper than the WM labeled tank. That's funny when you think about it...

I like the buderus tank, have had lots of good luck. I have seen three that I can remember fail out of the 100 we install each year. THe buderus no longer has a plug in anode rod, due to contractors not putting in a plug for them and tanks failing.. it is just a regular old magnesium anode now.Very easy tank to clean out.

    Buderus Tanks

Buderus tanks have a magnesium anode rod that should be check to insure it is still providing protection for the tank. This anode rod can be easily checked with an electrical meter. The electric anode rod is used to be standard equipment but due to not being plugged in, there where tank failures after a year or so. The tanks have a clean out plate to allow access to clean the coil and tank. Any build up on the coil can reduce efficiency. The tanks have 2" of high density foam insulation for very little stand by loss. Our warranty is full replacement for the first eight years and then pro-rated thereafter. My own personal tank is nine years old and I clean it about once every two years (well water with iron sediment). I measure the supply pipe temperature and return pipe temperature to determine when the coil needs cleaning. Othe tanks that do not allow cleaning would just loose efficiency and produce less hot water. Please contact us if there are any questions.
