the thing to do is freeze the lateral or have the city turn it off at the street ,then replace the house valve.

the pit orifice may be even older :) so work quickly :)

    Draining Hotwater System

Help - I am trying to take a radiator out of my hotwater system, and I thought that I drained the system, but the water keeps coming out every time I loosen the radiator, so I quickly replace it. I turned off the water at the street, I opened valves upstairs, and I attached a hose to the faucet at the furnace. A lot of water drained out, but there is still enough that I cannot take the radiator off. Any suggestions? Thank you.
  • Vacuums suck...

I suspect your radiator is in a vacuum. Try opening the air removal device on the top of the radiator with the bottom drain valve open and see what happens. Simply ventng the upper floor doesn't always work for radiators below that point.
