That is WAYYY too cool!
My guess is steam, with the street ell on the front there for some sort of vent/fill thing.
Nicest "save" item I've seen in a long time.
Good luck with it.0 -
Or gas-fired simulated logs on fire in fireplace?

you need to yank that old piece of iron outta there...
and send it,... to ME
i will give it a good home. *~/:)0 -
That's definitely a gas burner in the front
it might work the same way as those old Clow Gasteam radiators did- gas flame heats water which turns to steam.
If it's unvented, I wouldn't use it.

I put my vote with dave for it being a gas fire place. that looks like an old gas cock on the inlet and it looks like an old castiron burner. Cool find, just do not use it.Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.

Heater
Yes it looks like a gas fire place and the log above the burner is a cast iron chamber with the two nipples attaching it to a bigger chamber. My father is going to restore it and hook it up I immediately warned about CO and no vent, he understands and just wants it to be able to work so he can show it off to friends, I mean look how cool it is

Fireplace
It`s pretty obvious this was some sort of a fireplace, and I`m with Frank that it was gas fired, but just take a minute and imagine the people that must have sat in front of it? Man,, if this thing could talk!0 -
If it has a chamber above with 2 nipples that was probably a water heater. the nipples would be piuped to a tank above the unit and the water would flow by gravity to the tank to be stored for use later at the faucets in the home.Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.
