Boiler choice

I also considered NY Thermal's Trinity, perhaps with the DHW heat exchanger to save the gas used by the HW heater. My only problem with the other mod/cons, other than the Ultra is they do not offer a "flush" exterior mount for the intake/exhaust, which I really need. I cannot use the exposed PVC elbows where I will be exiting the basement. The Knight also looked pretty good, except for the venting. So, I guess it'll be the Ultra, and I'll hope for the best.

Boiler choice
I am trying to decide which is the better boiler for the cost. Heating a small house, 1100 sq ft, hot water ci rads, gas fired, converted gravity. I am caught between a Weil Mclain CGs-3, or a GV. Only a few hundrede bucks difference, one claims 85% the other 87% But which is the better boiler?0 -
Ultra!!!!!!!!!
Beg, borrow, steal!!!!!!!!! Go for the Ultra!!!!!!!!!0 -
Consider this...
1.)If you need to run any amount of vent pipe, you will be using very high$$ S/S for either of those boilers. PVC for the Ultra is much less $$$$$!!!!
2.) If it is a converted gravity system/with CI rads. you will be able to run some very low return temps. most of the year... good for the Ultra, bad for a CI boiler....
3.) you will need to pipe it P/S anyway because of the above mentioned low return temps.... yeah the GV has low temp. protection, but if it were me I'd be going P/S anyway..
4.) you get 93% even when running at high temps. (I've gotten higher than that at 170+ on my trusty comb. analyzer)and in the shoulder months you will be getting very high 90"s in eff., over all close to 10% better just in comb. eff.
5.) with the Ultra you will get much longer run times... even the 80 will be oversized, but throw in an indirect to help justify the 80K BTU's.... you'll have tons of highh eff. DHW and be able to turn that thing down as low as 16K for taking the chill off in the not so cold months when you just need a little heat..
6.) with the built in reset you can program the Ultra so that Mom and the kids can play with the t-stat till their little heart's content and they still won't be able to get the heat up so high that when you get home you won't be hot under the collar literally and figuratively... :-)
As you can tell by now I think the Ultra is a real "no brainer"

Thanks & Happy Thanksgiving
I have to agree with you guys. Still I had to ask. The Ultra-80 is about twice the cost of the CGs-3, at my local supply house, and I was think of going for the cost-effectiveness. Figuring that at half the cost (about $1300) it would pay to use the CGs for about 8 or 10 years, and then up-date to the latest model of the times. After hearing all the feed-back I may just purchase the Ultra and do it. WM tells me that the unit "comes ready to run, no need to have it analized." Now I'm not so sure. And not having an analyzer, I'd have to hire someone else to do the test.0 -

You are going to need any unit analized at start up to ensure proper operation so that should be a moot point.0 -
W/M is full of used turkey
Any, every and all combustion appliances should be set up by a qualified heating tech using a digital analyzer. To say their unit is "factory set" is just plain wrong. There are too many variations in field conditions. Gas pressure, vent length, btu content of the gas......... WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG!!0 -
Another reason to not use Weil-McLain
that's the most irresponsible thing I've ever heard from a boiler manufacturer. We should stop using their products unless and until they change their tune.

condensing
Well, since your buying it and your not paying any mark up, why not go for the Ultra.

Haven't found an Ultra yet....
that needed adjustment in the field. However I agree that the statement was foolish and I am quite sure that the WM literature that comes with the boiler encourages a combustion test on start-up. I have started many of them up and have found them to be right on.... except for the one that I forgot to install the LP ring in.... yeah it ran... but the numbers were out of kelter.....Yup the brass orfice was still in the bag.....
I think your making a good choice...let us know how you make out.
