boiler feed water

It makes even more sense than that.
A) The lime/ sediment issue
B) You will have to heat the water ANYWAY, whether before going in the boiler or after.
C)Less risk of thermal shock when adding make up water.

boiler feed water
Referance: "A Pocket Full Of Steam Problems (with solutions)". Near the back in the commercial section, Dan suggests using preheated feed water (from a hot water heater) to cut down on the lime in the boiler (leaving it in the hot water heater). This makes good sense to me. Does anyone see an issue with doing this in a home heating system? The cost for the heated water seems trivial when compared to the long-term positive effects on the life-span of the boiler.

Not to mention driving off some of the dissolved oxygen before it enters the boiler.0 -
If you need enough makeup water that getting it from the hot water tank makes a differance then you have other bigger problems ;-)
For fillup after install or a repair, it's not that bad of an idea.0 -
boiler feed water
It is a new install. Feed line is in bad shape (all plumbing is). So I thought, what the heck, if I'm gonna run a new line for feed water, why not tap off the hot water output? Gonna run it into a water meter, than feed the new boiler. In MY mind, it sure sounds good!

There's not a huge difference between cold water and 130F water as far as dissolved gases or sediment is concerned. (Boiling water is another matter altogether.) Sure, over time several hundred thousand gallons could crud up the hot water heater, but if you are just filling a heating system, you are not drawing several hundred thousand gallons and it isn't worth the effort. Not even close.
It's one of those apparently good ideas that don't stand up when you do the numbers. Like watching out for terrorists while you smoke and drive without a seat belt.0 -
I would rather
smoke a terrorist while wearing my seatbelt, Cricket. Best of both worlds!
Your points are well taken.
