One Pipe Steam Question

About this one pipe counterflow system I'm dealing with. I replaced the radiator vents that weren't working. I now have a main that's not working, though I could sware it was working 2 days ago. There are 3 radiators on that main, none are heating. I checked the one on the upper floor, pulled the vent off the radiator, and it's panting. The other main (which is the first one off the header) seems to be working fine.

I'm thinking the boiler may need to be cleaned, but that one main is working fine. I'm starting to think it may be a build up of sludge in the piping. I hear a little bit of hammering too as it comes up to pressure.

Do you think a bad main vent will cause the panting problem? Does this sound more like stuff in the piping? All the mains are insulated. The pipes are pitched like crazy, I'd guess 1" for every 3' of run.

Fast venting can cause that by making fast condensate in a cold main.

We see that problem when someone (tries to) use a long piece of fin tube on steam with a fast air vent.

    It's just you and me

I'll try closing off the radiator vents a bit and see if that helps. I know what you mean, but I've got this feeling something else is going on too.
