1 pipe steem heat

Thanks alot for the Steem heat help books, wow what great info-I think I have figured out what I need fixed and want to know if anyone can do it for me? From the book it looks like I need air vents put in my main stack(ther are none). The boiler was put in a t instead of like the owners manual said with 2 risers and my preasureall is set at 15 instead of 2 or 3. The one raditor might need a 2nd #40 air vent as well-Anyone near Hagerstown MD interested? I am about 30 min north of Hagerstown in Waynesboro PA
thanks
Bill

    Bill,

Look at the very top of this page. Top left to be precise. See the little tab "Find a Professional"?

Plug in your zip code and some of the best of the best names will appear.

Let us know how you make out, please.

Thanks Ken, I did try that but noone was close-the closest guy was in MD, I was hoping some old timer or new steem guy might read the post and live closer and be willing fix me up. If not maybe someone that lives further but is willing to drive. I have talked to heating people in my town, the one wanted to just drain some water and fix it-then charged me $115, another guy could not find the return pump and said it should not be working. The last guy wanted to take all the pipes out and run a new 2 pipe system, even though my raditors only have 1 pipe. So after ordering the books and reading them, now I know just enough to see through the "nuckleheads" and would like a guy who knows old 1 pipe steem.

    steam work

You may want to do some more research, or call in an advisor. Once you have a plan you can have any plumber twist pipe for you.

    Repair needed in lower PA

    Thanks steemhead
Here are some pics of the job, I have read Dan Holohan books cover to cover and it lists some other issues I could be having, like my drain line-none of books have something that looks like the my drains. So the one post of just getting a plumber to do what I feel should be done won't work because I don't want to miss something and then do something I should'ntht
    thanks

that boiler is piped all wrong
  • I see three problems right away

First, the Hartford Loop is waaayyyyy above the boiler's waterline. This can cause banging. I don't have the Burnham V8 manual handy but I'll bet it was supposed to be at least a foot lower.

Second, the two returns are teed together above the waterline. This would allow steam to jump from one to the other, impairing venting and possibly causing banging. Each return should drop down below the waterline before they tee together and rise into the Hartford Loop.

Third, those Dole main vents are probably too small.

As long as the steam header itself is the proper pipe size, it should be OK.

It looks to me like your boiler was used to replace an old one that was a lot taller, and they didn't do the needed repiping to fit the new boiler.

    dirty water in steam system

A few months ago I had a brand new steam boiler installed. My furnace was over 40 years old, still working great, but using too much oil. Anyway, the new system is installed and working, but I'm having trouble getting it tweeked just right. When the plumber 1st installed the system, he had set the pressure up too high and I believe it stirred up a lot of junk. Also, my pipes were not covered. With all the knocking, I knew I had to cover the pipes. I did that and almost almost all the knocking is gone, except for one knock in the new piping in the addition added to the main house (and it only happens sometime). Anyway, the water is very dirty right now. and dirty water is seeping out of one of the main vents above the boiler - about 2' away. The one above the boiler was doing the same thing but hasn't been doing it since I covered the pipes and the plumber had skimmed the boiler about the same time. Anyway, I'm having a hard time getting rid of the diry water. Skimming the boiler seemed to be a temporary fix. Can chemicals solve the problem? I have a hard time getting my plumber to do things - like cleaning all the piping out. I don't think he's ever done it or had to do it. I also don't know what's involved in that or what the cost might be. I'm just looking for a reasonbly priced solution. If chemicals work well, I'm all for them, even if it voids the boiler warranty. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
  • as others

As others said, the boiler (not furnace) is piped wrong since u had a PLUMBER did the job, not a steam pro... Repipe the boiler accordling and re do the return vents ...
Get a real electricion to do ur electric for safety's sake!
  • Avoid using chemicals

the system needs to be flushed out. We usually use street pressure from a hose to do this.
