    102 RPM...

Wonder what it sounds like at an idle.

In one of the pictures near the end of the crank with the ring gear on it, I can see what looks like the starter motor. Obviously, they have a decompression for start feature. Wonder what the battery bank looks like.

All of the cruise ships I've been on in the last 7 years are diesel electric. The shaft motor is a reversible variable speed electrically driven motor. Wonder if these big guys are follwoing the same trend.

    Technology, In't it sumpthin'!

    Thanks for sharing.

    Torquey...

They're pretty torquey for a Japanese engine! ;-)

    5 million foot-pounds of torque!

And all it needs is bunker crude / sludge to run on...

Thanks for sharing Bruce! I love the staircases leading down to the bottom of the crankcase in each cylinder. The scale is unreal.

that would take a Large can of STP motor honey for the bearings

Plastigauge for it must look like a Rope :)
    "
Harahito. Bring the 175 and 3/4's over here. We have to tighten up this head bolt":)

"That's the 177 and 25 /32nds Shallow Well! :) i am going to have to send you back to American Tape measure reading class." on second thought, go get the 225 ton overhead crane and bring the Rocker cover gasket over :) "

that thing must be a real challenge to assemble...

    think of the Impact wrench:)

I wonder how they forge a crank that big!
That engine probably uses compressed air directly to the cylinders to start,Mark, something along the lines of what is described HERE on these "tiny" submarine diesels :)

The electric motor in the photo may be just for turning the crank while they are erecting it or for servicing later on.

    Power to the people

    wow, nice artcle.

Diesels are in the news a lot these days. A JCB powered streamliner set a new record at Bonneville this year. Dual 4 cylinder backhoe engines! Not to mention Audi's wins and a Peugeot 700 hp V12 5.5 liter oil burner.

And now LSD at the pumps! (low sulpher diesel)

    hot rod

    Jacking gear

That motor is probably the jacking gear. They use motors to rotate the propeller of large ships slowly to minimize warping of drive shafts and probably to allow the engine to move slowly to equalize the heating of all cylinders after shutting the engine off.

    Thanks for the link

The FM engines are on the tugs that I get to ride in sometimes. Mt neighbor is an engineer and captain.
Last month I toured again the sub in Baltimore harbor, by myself since it was end of season. Cool stuff.
