Recommendations for Baseboard

Stelrad has a 12" tall version. They usually have most sizes in stock in Canada.

VEHA has some very good pricing and a 12" tall version, though not the size selection of some of the others.

I have no complaints about either. If anything the VEHA units are slightly heavier than the Stelrad. I prefer the look to Runtal, but that's just me.

  • A friend of mine sent me an e-mail

requesting a recommendation for baseboard. I thought I would post the question to see what all of you are using. Here is his e-mail:

I had a question on baseboard. I need to replace some baseboard in new sections of my house, I looked at RUNTEL (very expensive)

And RADSON (supplier does not have our sizes) are there other high output baseboards you would recommend. I figured this is your area of expertise.

I am trying avoid things like SLANT/FIN (standard baseboard) because it takes a million feet of it to provide the BTU’s.

Let me know if you have any recommendations.

    OK, I'll bite.

I have Runtal, their stock baseboard (3-tube high with lamelles) plus an assortment of convectors, vertical tube and "bicycle rack" styles. Excellent radiant output working well with low water temperatures, but they also convect well. "Very expensive" is subjective. I bought them once (changing over time, adding here and there) and am quite happy with my choice. You have to know your wall space, every outlet and so-on. Nothing against normal baseboard, just my choice. But it takes a lot of it as you noted to do the same work especially at lower water temperatures.

As an alternative to Runtal, Buderus and others make thinner steel stamped radiators, some with built-in TRV's. I have specified these in some houses as a deduct alternate to Runtal. They are OK too.
  • Brad that was my

recommendation a while back to this friend, I felt for what he is looking to do Runtal was the way to go. I was curious if others had preferences that are somewhat lower in cost.

I hope to maybe hear from some others on this.

By the way Brad I left you a voice mail message the other day.

    My choice,

For standard baseboard is Haydon. If space is a consideration, they also make a taller, "high output" version,(900btu/ft). Some of the other options are kind of cheesy, but these front covers just bark at you when you hit them."18 gauge tough" is their selling tag.

Personally, I'd like to think that Cast Iron would be a baseboard option. Cost IS a factor but comfort is king !

If the wall space is at a premium, I highly suggest any of the panel radiators. Buderus is what we usually get, but there are other name brands availble...not sure on the cost.
Like Brad said, they do both kinds of heat....they radiate AND convect. (That IS the only way...right?) Chris

Slant Fin makes Cast Iron baseboard as well.

Have you looked at the new cast iron baseboard that is available?
