    propane vs oil

I have a steam /one pipe system, that is over 25 years old and just found out original contractor screwed up the piping (no Hartford loop, etc). The plumber said gas is better than oil , but we do not have gas on our street- any suggestion of propane vs oil?

He said oil, just like coal (which the house used originally ),burns evenly and you get a more constant flow , where oil you do not - no matter how well you adjust the burner.

Do you mean gas burns like coal?

Either way, the guy's a knucklehead, Alan. He's giving you dopey information.

I'd suggest that plumber stick to replacing johnnie bolts and wax rings.

Better call someone who's a heating professional, before you really get in trouble!

Ask your plumber if he does an efficiency test when he is done installing a gas boiler installation. Then ask your oil company if they do an efficiency test when they install an oil boiler.

Plumbers install gas because "they are set up by the factory". That is a load of bull. All boilers should have a combustion test done upon completion of installation.

Why do oil co's install boilers, indirects, oil fired heaters, circulators, ect all year long but when a relief valve goes a boiler drain leaks adip tube breaks down and starts to destroy fixtures,or a bearing assembly leaks on an old system with no valves suddenly OH NO MAM PLUMBERS DO THAT!

    coal

coal is the best from what I remember from the old days.
my father used coal to heat our house from the 1930 to 1950. Fill it up at night and turn the air intake down and it ran all night for us. with regard to natural gas or propane, as long as the gas was there in the piping, it would be fine.

Probably for the same reason that around here Plumbers install boilers, indirects, oil fired heaters, circulators, ect all year long but when a relief valve goes a boiler drain leaks adip tube breaks down and starts to destroy fixtures,or a bearing assembly leaks on an old system with no valves suddenly OH NO MAM CALL YOUR OIL COMPANY THEY DO THAT, Just think it changes from place to place.
Last night my partner went out to a water leak a plumber piped the return of a radiator into the sewer system, now how does anyone leave a job not knowing that something is wrong with the boiler water feed running steady.

Joe ... I agree neither are similar.

I favor oil over gas, largely due to the misconception of those that think it's safer, cleaner, and doesn't need to be maintained like oil does...

Gas is certainly leading in the number of CO deaths and vacant lots (with building debris strewn around) in the country.

    Bruce...

Just like I've said before, they shouldn't be allowed to have anything more than an adjustable wrench and a van full of johnnie bolts and wax rings. Joe... I'm only kidding :)
