Welded heat exchangers

Once the heat exchanger cracks, it means that the integrity of the vessel itself has failed. You and the equipment manufacturer should void all( if any) warranties on this job. Also have them sign off that you spotted this problem and make sure you shut down the equipment. Now if they weld and the thing pops again and kills someone, You are covered. In my opinion it is not legal to repair a failed vessel that has failed. It's not like a ship that has crashed into a dock.......

We are working in a municipal building in NY where we found a cracked heat exchanger in one of the furnaces. When we pointed it out to the powers that be the local building inspector, who also happens to be a local plumber, said he would just weld it shut. My question is this - is it legal to weld a crack in the heat exchanger?

    no

In my experience, the requirement may vary in your area, but the HE must be replaced, according to our code. If you elect to repair, it must be tested and the welds x-rayed to ensure they meet the manufactures stds. and the mfg is the only one allowed as they know the std. By the time you pay for the weld, shipping, testing, report and return shipping. Removal and installation of the HE. get a new one, or if the unit is old enough, replace it for better efficiency and right sized.

    Wow, a public building

Let's endanger a bunch of people, not just a couple.

It may not be illegal, but it doesn't seem the right thing to do.

    carbon monoxide

i got a strange feeling the building dept. would not go along with this insane idea. this city spends money like tomorrow is a rumor and you are going to repair something that is dangerous ??? and they are so concerned about cigarette smoke ?? they should use a new stainless heat exchanger and get it over with. how much will the welder's labor cost ??? we got some real doozies out there.

Thanks to all who responded. The building inspector came to his senses. We are now pricing up a replacement heat exchanger or new r/t unit for them.
