Old one pipe steam system

Hello,
I awoke this morning to loud banging sounds. I thought that my whole steam system collapsed... When I got down stairs water was pouring out of two vents down stairs. One vent was on the main and another was on an old capped line. When I look at the water level it was full. The day before I filled it to the line marked on the boiler. I drained the system and I got the water level back to the mark line. I have not run the furnace since; however, I let the hot water coil run. I was wondering where all this water is coming from. This is the second time now. There are two water intakes to the system. One is for the hot water coil and the other is for the water level. Any ideas?
