It sure isn't everyday you get to hang 5 Vitodens in one house. I suppose if it did happen that often, even that would get boring. But..........I'm not at that point yet by a long way. The 4 15-60's side by side are for the driveway. They will be staged, rotated and modulated by a Viessmann Cascade control which in turn is called to attention by a Tekmar 665. The 11-44 hanging by itself is for the house, a combination radiant slab and panel radiator setup, along with a Vitocell 120 gallon indirect.

The drive is split into 3 zones consisting of the pad in front of the garage, an upper 1/2 and lower 1/2. The elevation from the street to the pad in front of the garage is just over 70' vertical. We have a tad over 7,000 lineal feet of tube in the drive portion alone counting the main 1 1/2" pex runs. The pad adds another 2,400 ft of tube, all of which was 3/4" Viega. (Try working with that stuff at about 20* in November, it'll either kill you or make a man out of you)

I'll try to post more pics as the piping progresses.

Hope I have these pics sized right.

    Yeah Baby!

That is alot of Vitodens to hang in one day. You have earned a pair of the orange Viessman speedos. That is alot of boiler power. Looks like you have a real nice project going on.

    wow!!~

Nice Steve!! Were you able to get the insulation jacket for the larger LLH? I'm interested in the Cascade control...keep us abreast as you commission the system. Again, looks great!!

    Steve,

    WOW !

I have customers who make enough in their sleep to pay for 1 Vitodens....and fight it with every ounce of their being. I'd like to have been a fly on the wall while you sold 5(!) AND the related system!! You Da Man ! Chris

    I promise

If somehow orange Speedos bearing the Viessmann label are bestowed upon me, the picture will NOT appear on the Wall, or anywhere else for that matter!!

    Insulation

All the pipng and associated materials will be professionaly insulated by a guy I have used in the past for that purpose. He will custom fab special shaped items on site.

    cascading

We have installed two in 1 house with the cascade controll and all I've got to say is that is one weird puppy . The programing , curve settings etc is WAY different than anything else.

    I heard that too

So I got in touch with a rep that has a few under his belt. He said "Get it hung and wired and CALL ME! Do not touch any buttons". Sounds like fun!

I guess the best way to describe what I've been reading in the Cascade manual is to say that the control thinks both horizontally and vertically. It can be set up in a bunch of different ways depending on the needs of the system. Can't wait to see what the driveway system will do.

    A lovey thing

Look into two things for the future:

    www.thebarrier.com for under the slab/drive
and the webstone EXP to make piping up the boilers a bit faster. (Same as the ones they use for tankless)

Any word on ASME rating for the GB yet? I see a few of those in my future also if we can get them approved in Michigan.

    Keep us updated!

I'm intrigued by the Cascade controller. It's unclear to me, but my recollection is that you can only run a series of similar cap. boilers off the thing, i.e. it's not possible to cascade two different cap. Vitodens in a 1,2, or 1+2 fashion to modulate output from very low levels to very high levels.

Anyway, thanks for the inspiring pics and I hope to see more in the future. Thanks!

    Hmmmm

I haven't heard that but I will investigate it. I have another project on the back burner that would be ideal for using a Vitodens 24 or 32 as the base boiler and then adding larger units to the mix. I don't see why it would make a difference to the control unless it would screw up the logic for rotating the boilers. That's the only thing I can think of Constantin. Thanks for the kind words.

    That's just it...

... perhaps there is little benefit to a very wide latitude of modulation vs. the ability to load up each Vitodens equally in terms of burn-time, burner cycles, etc.

Re-reading the manuals for the Cascade controller, I first ran across the interesting tidbit that it only works for the -44 and -60 models (i.e. the high end of the range). Thus, attaching a "smaller" Vitodens to cover the low shoulder season loads appears impossible.

I also infer that the cascade controller adds more boilers in the given start sequence (or cycling them automatically) to hit a setpoint water supply temperature. Thus, staging the boilers along the lines of
    • Boiler 1 on, Boiler 2 off
    • Boiler 1 off, Boiler 2 on
    • Boiler 1+2 on
does not seem possible. But I would be happy to be wrong.
  • WOW!

I thought two was the limit on a residence;-)

Where did you find all that venting space? Have you tried the new cold weather termination kits? This may help you keep all of that vapor off the sides of the house. The steam comming off the corner of that building is going to be hard to miss.

I have to add my WOW

Steve, Great Salesmanship. That looks like one great project and the customer is very lucky to have you doing the install.

This could have been one big Beast of a boiler, dumping heat up the chimney but you have brought in top of the line efficient equipment.

Nice job, can't wait to see the rest.

    Day two

We set the Vitocell 300 and got it piped from the boiler room in the garage to the mechanical room in the house. Layed out the near boiler piping scheme and finished the gas pipe to all five Vito's.

This job has been a great illustration of what NOT to do as a GC. I'll give the guy a break and tell you all that he is working handicapped on this job as he's not the one that started it. But still, if it could be scheduled in such a manner that the trades all were working on top of each other, he managed to do it. For example, we had to move all of our tools, equipment, pipe and fittings out of our work area three different times for the drywallers. We came to work on some overhead pex runs one day and found our scaffolding confiscated by the carpenters. While I was there last fall doing the trench work for the drive with the backhoe, we had to work around and wait for the landscapers almost daily. Today I called him and let him know that the underground LP tank gauge was on zero and he should get more propane delivered. He responded by telling me that the two temporary furnaces we have running in the house (a 100K and a 140K) were using way too much fuel. They have been running non-stop for 3 weeks and there is no ceiling in the 40'x40'x22' great room yet or any ceiling insulation in the whole building. What does he think is going to happen??? Notice the pic showing the roof of the house with nearly 6" of snow melted off in less than 18 hours. Hmmmm, wonder what does that?

At any rate the job is still sweet and I view it as a privilege to be able to design and install a system like this. We're still having fun!!

27 is looking up at the house from the street

30 is standing on the garage approach looking across the street. The pines are about 60' tall

33 circs hung and gas pipe finished to all the driveway boilers

34 Jason Zinger finishing the gas pipe to the house boiler and indirect piping completed back to boiler.

31 The company Benz sitting in front of the garage. We had the Rems threader set up inside it so we could thread pipe where it was warm. Lot's of snow last night on top of about a 1/4" of ice from yesterday.

    Thanks Mr Milne

I'll take that as a compliment and I owe you a Sam Adams when we meet again! Maybe find a place we can have a lobsta' or two along with it.

I did explore using a single Vertomat on this job but I couldn't get past firing up something with that much water content for indirect DHW use in the summer. The price would have actually been a little less overall due to much simpler piping and fewer circs/controls etc.

    Press fittings all the way

Can't say as they are all Viega fittings though. My Viega sources around here are constantly out of even the most rudimentary items. Like straight 1 1/4" tees for example along with 1 1/4" 90* ells. I would think those would be pretty basic inventory. Let's just say we found some "other" fittings that work very nicely, thank you.

Nice isolation valve but I like the flexibility of the B&G's with the moveable flange. I'll look into the barrier stuff. Is that like insultarp?

    Looks great

That is going to be one clean installation. Very nice.

The boiler pumps may need to be larger than 15-58's. We typically use 26-99's on 15-60's.

    Good eye

I looked at the numbers and I feel that working with the delta T we'll be seeing on the snow melt, the 58's should be OK. We'll be keeping an eye on the temps when it's fired up and change if need be. I'm figuring on a 35 to 40 degree drop which according to Viessmann's spec requires a tad less than 10 GPM and developes about 6.5 ft of head. (These are LP so they're derated to 191,000 btu)

    Thanks for the heads up.

    I was wrong once before.....

    About $800.00

or so I'm told.... but the Viessman version probably costs more.
