Question for the Hughes Customers
Are you comfortable buying from a Wholesaler whose parent company has been trying to put you out of business since they opened?
Rick0 -
I'm Guessin'...
Rick doesn't work for Hughes. :-)
HD has been selling boilers, water heaters and A/C for a good while now. I really think think that they needed a place to park a bunch of our money.0 -
Well then
let them buy their stock back and increase shareholders value. J.Lockard0 -
Never heard of Hughes before!
But, checking out their website as a result of your post & read their committment to customer service list.
No wonder they were a desirable addition: http://www.hughessupply.com/about/12commitments.html

They have
500+ locations. They are the big boy behind Ferguson and just got bigger. Their 12 step program looks great on paper doesn't it?
I think they are going to lose alot of Contractor customers after this...0 -
Hughes Supply
Yea, the 12 step program on the website looks great but I guess no one at my local branch has ever read it. The service and product knowledge is not very impressive. So I guess they will fit right in to the Home Depot family without any additional training.0 -
Here's my take
Okay, I'm in the South and was slightly affected when HD bought out Apex Supply, the local Trane wholesaler. I say slightly because I didn't do much business with them before the buyout and even less since.
From a website that I was reading when I found out about the buyout, the writer commented something like "This goes along with HD's focus on contractors as opposed to Lowe's focus on DIY'ers." Baloney! I drive by a HD store occasionly and DO see a few contractor vehicles, but many more cars.
I do purchase quite a bit from the local Hughes Supply. I'm even a stockholder in Hughes (and HD unfortunatly). I'm not in favor of the purchase because it DOES cheapen our trade. The people I talk to at the HS say that nothing will change in the way the business is run. We'll see.
I don't feel that HD has been trying to put me out of business, because in my state you have to have a license to purchase HVAC equipment. There are more places on the 'net that sell equipment that may get someone killed. Now, water heaters and electrical panels are sold to anyone here, and I've found that the exact florescent light fixtures are cheaper at HD than at Hughes....

Hughes
I go to Hughes Supply for equipment and metal, as well as some plumbing for my hot water jobs. They made a big deal abaout the 12 Step program when it was implemented. All it did for me was slow the process down.
In defense of my local Hughes, they do have good service and product knowledge.
