R7184 Intermittent Problem

I installed one on a new boiler install in 1999. For some reason it would lock out every once in a while. I left a voltage logger and found that the voltage varied by as much as 30 volts on occasion. Then about a month later the transformer in the street went, and the problem went away....
No problems since then though

Intermittent Problem R7184
I have run into a couple of Honeywell R7184 primary controls recently with an intermittent lockout problem. These were both new boiler installs. Sometimes they would lock out several times in a row. Sometimes there would be no problem for weeks. Replacing the control fixed the problem. In the past the primary has always worked or not worked for me. Is anyone else seeing this problem? Thanks!0 -
intermittent problem r7184
Same problem here had 4 of the beckett labeled 7184b controls locking out right out of the box brand new.....it would run for 5 seconds and then lockout...didnt matter if you jumped f & f within those 5 seconds they all lockout hopefully they fix this problem soon i like the control0 -
my buddy and i were disucssing this a couple hrs ago
he was just happy it didnt shut down like it did the other day...luckily he has antifreeze in the system and caught it in time. the entire day care center shut down....and he got there within mins of the owner...Yikes.
he walked in and the pipes were Hot today .so alls well for now i think on new construction theres all kinds of fans going, tools screaming away at the boards and sheet rock dust all over the place , not to mention people running in and out slamming doors on very tight buildings...0 -

It sounds like you hooked up these controls without a solenoid valve, If the R7184B or R7184P detects flame 8 seconds into the pre purge or post purge it will lock out, jumping FF is the same as detecting flame. Try those controls on burners with solenoid valves and they will work.
If you need a control on a burner with out a valve use A R7184A.0 -
Are you sure its a contro problem ?
Maybe another problem and the control is just doing its job.
You can test to see if the control detects enough fire to run properly. After the ignition drop out click, push the red button. The lcd light will flash. Each flash is a range of ohm's. One - two is fine, three - needs tweaking,four- needs work..Work in the form of eye, alingment or flame adjustments...0 -
Rick - in each case these were new burners right out of the box straight from the factory. They had solenoid valves.
Big Ed - each of these had been adjusted with a Testo 325 to between 12 to 13% CO2.
@#$% would work fine when I was there but start laughing at me and lock out when I was gone. Much like the boiler that pouts when the owner takes a vacation in the winter, I am sure these primaries were just messing with me.0
