    Comparison of Hydronic System Heaters

The Buderus GB142-24 and the Munchkin T80 are both condensing type heaters with modulating burners for hydronic heating systems. The Buderus heater has a cast aluminum heat exchanger, while the Munchkin heater has a 316L stainless steel heat exchanger. I plan to fire the selected heater on natural gas. What are the pros and cons of each heater? Could corrosion be a problem in the cast aluminum heat exchanger in the Buderus unit?

    Ask yourself this...

Do you think that well-established companies like Buderus and Weil-Mclain would risk their reputations by either not testing the durability of cast aluminum heat exchangers in boilers, or worse yet, knowingly selling boilers that they know are not durable?

    Depends on a few things.

If price point is the greatest thought, the answer is apparrent.

2nd thing I think of is who will be installing either of these units. Which one are they comfortable with....and which one can the parts be accessed for in a timely fashion should the need arise?

My personal feelings? Both are great units. Depending on your systems needs, and the control strategy required both have their pluses and minuses. Installed and maintained correctly, either will do well.... As long as the installer is comfortable with whichever YOU decide to go with, would be the biggest factor in the choice. MHO. Chris

    Comparison

I've never installed a Munchkin but I've installed plenty of their first cousin "Trinity".Same HX and I'm sure there are more components the same.I ended dropping the line after too many nagging problems.Flame rod sensors and igniters to name a few.Of the 30 or so units I've installed over the years I only have 2 that I've had no problem with.I now install the GB142 and I could'nt be happier.I have 11 installed with no problems. The heat exchanger looks like it belongs in a car not a boiler and with a 25 year warranty and the company standing behind it it gives my customers peace of mind.

    Good Luck

    munchkin

I have installed alot of buderus cast iron gas and oil boiler and believe there products are one of the best in the market there st line of indirect are in my opion one of the top 4 indirect tanks out there .I have yet to install a gb i would love to there price is a little higher then a munchkin but in all likely hood a great product by a excellent company ,but however i have installed a few munchkins and have had no promblems i have used ther vision one control package (outdoor reset) with great success and every custemer where quite happy with there lower ulity bills at least for the shoulder months fall and spring .Your choice really comes down to what the installer is used to using and what unit the company your dealing with and are willing to stand behind and honor the warranty .There are others also like vissesmann who's top of the line condensing modulating boiler are top notch ,but all in all its what the installation company will service and keep going years from now is the main concern .Also make sure that the installer are familar with primary secondary pump and pumping away techinics otherwise get ready for promblems .On a final note in my own home i'm in the works for a munchkin t80 wall hung some staple up radiant and constant circ on existing baseboard with zone valves removed and each loop balanced running at a lower supply temp .In closing what ever unit you go with try to get a heat loss for your home and the amount of existing radition be measured and seen if meets the required load and if the system could possible run at a lower water temp i know iit's alot to asborb maybe try the find a pro listing peace and good luck clammy
