Joe PA and Penn State
Mad Dog_2
Member Posts: 7,678
Brooklyn Born Joe Paterno was having two back-to-back bas seasons. In todays lack-of-loyalty world..what did the Penn State Board of Directors want to do???? You guessed it FIRE HIM - just as they did to the great Tom Landry. What Joe Pa and The N. Lions accomplished in last night's in Triple O.T. was the hardcore never say die attitude of his generation. God Bless PA and Penn State. Mad Dog

Here! Here!
Mad Dog,
It would have been such a shame if they lost...they dominated the game but gave up those two huge plays. Remember that they lost their running back early and then their stud linebacker in the fourth (of seven!) quarter.
Did you see how fired up JoePa was? Wow...and 79 years old! I hope I have that kind of energy when I'm 59!
God bless them indeed...and some people argued against him being coach of the year.

My Joe Paterno story
Joe paterno is a class individual, ask ayone who has ever met him!
I went to Penn State in the mid 70s (yep, I'm an old fart.) One day I was sitting on the stoop outside a rarely used door to our dining hall reading a philosophy book. Someone walks by and asks what I'm reading. I look up about the say and I am staring right into the eyes of Joe Paterno.
There's no one else there. Even then Joe was a legend in college football and a god at Penn State. He was talking to me, a nobody physics student sitting on an unused stoop reading an assignment. I finally managed to spit out what I had to say, and he could see I was quite embarassed. He smiled and walked on his way.
He believed in winning, but he believed even more in a college education and the shaping of people's lives.
Threatening to fire coaches seems pretty much standard in this era. In Joe's case, I take no stock in it. There are too many alumni that would exert their will to see that this would not happen. You can replace Directors much easier than you can replace Joe.
Another of my favorite Joe stories from my era. There was a restaurant that reserved a table for Joe and his wife every Saturday night. One day the women's lacrosse coach comes in and asks for a table.
"Sorry, we're booked."
"What about that table there?"
"That's reserved for Joe Paterno."
"I'm a Penn State head coach, why can't I have it?"
As the host is hemming and hawing, Joe and his wife walk in. When the situation comes out, Joe invites the lacrosse coach to dine with them, letting everyone off the hook.

Being a PSU Alum,
It is amazing to listen to the fair weather fans. But at least they didn't hang him in efegy, like Bowden got at WVU.

WE ARE
PENN STATE!!!!!
What a hair and blood pressure raising game. It felt like the "old" days when I was a student there in the early nineties watching the sometimes close games but knowing that somehow they would pull out a win. Kudos to JoePa and the excellent staff of coaches he put together over the years. He is one of the few men I can put up there w/ my Father as hard working, humble, and worthy of unwavering trust. The man has given his life, and all his talents to not just Penn State but also to the future of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a whole. He has positively influenced thousands of people's lives, and not just through his coaching job.
I still think that this year's team could have contended USC for the championship....let's get a playoff system going NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
If the AP, and others had this kind of control over the NFL we would never see what I consider the most important quality of a championship team..... HEART, the kind of heart it took the Patriots to rise above adversity and paper tiger teams like the Colts and win three straight Superbowls. It is all about HEART.
Okay, I will now get off my soap-box.
GO PENN STATE!!!!!!!

The Orange Bowl
Maybe you all can help me with this one because Ive been struggling with it all day. I cant decide whether last nights Orange Bowl game between Penn St. and Florida St. was one of the best games Ive ever seen or the worst.
On one hand, you had a 5 hour, triple OT epic involving two hall of fame coaches and two storied programs.
On the other hand, we were subjected to a night filled with penalties, turnovers, safeties, shanked kicks, fumbles, wobbly passes and foolish personal fouls. Great or unwatchable? If a game can be both, it was the 06 Orange Bowl. The game was great, unwatchable and definitely bizarre. But dont try telling that to the two icons coaching. Both FSUs Bobby Bowden and Penn St.s Joe Paterno felt it was hard fought and neither team deserved to lose. Either that, or it was sloppily played and neither team deserved to win. One or the other.0 -
I'm a homer, but
The calls against Penn State are nothing new. Seems like everytime they get a good team, the calls get worse. But, a good team should be able to rise above a few bad calls made by volunteer officials......

Yes, you are a Homer
All fans of all teams use that card everytime they can. You really don't think the Refs had it out for Penn State do you? Really?
Ol' Canasta0 -
Mr. Simpson....Homer Simpson that is
I think that if you read the whole post, I did say that a good team should be able to rise above bad calls. yes I think that I am qualified to say whether or not a call is bad because we have the benefit of instant replay. No, I don't know, cannot prove, and did not say that Penn State gets more bad calls than anyone else, because I don't watch all college football games. I am sure that all fans of all teams can, and do say that their teams get a disproportional amount of bad calls compared to a national average of bad vs. good calls in NCAA football games.
You remind me of the kids I knew growing up that would pop the balloons at someone else's birthday party just because it was fun to rain on someone else's parade. Then they grew up to be bullies and make younger kids lives miserable until they met me....
Go find another parade to rain on!!

I hope Pavolsky (Pavlov I call him) is ok
He's the best LB to Come outta Penn State since Jack Ham. He also won the Butkus Award this year. He'd better hit the weight room this year if he even wants to make a dent in The NFL. I don't wanna see him fall victim to the same bad knees **** had. Mad Dog

That kid...
is from the high school next to ours - Neshaminy. Both Barr brothers came from there also (Chris and Matt) and not only kicked for JoePa but had good NFL careers.
My friend's neighbor's daughter dates him...and because they "broke up" again (two different colleges) she didn't watch the game!
Teenagers!
Hey Cosmo - the Pats haven't won three straight...yet! :-)
