Annual Tradition

I used to enjoy giving the old tree a hurl as well, but things have changed in our house. For the past few years we have been getting Balsam Fir trees that have quite fragrant needles both alive and dead. He now bag the tree and keep it on the deck until most of the needles have dropped off and into the bag. My wife uses them to stuff these "snake-like" gizmos that you use to kill drafts under doors and such. Makes a few each year and gives them away as Christmas Gifts the following year. Oddly enough, we've been discussing options for burial or cremation lately. I guess I may never know if I'll end up in someone's Christmas Gift next year! What a creative girl I married 25 years ago!

    Christmas tree

New years day, the day my lovely bride takes down the Christmas tree ornaments. It is my job to remove the lights and the stand. I just threw the tree out on the lawn where it will remain for an undetermined amount of time. This really irritates her, I don't know why I enjoy tradition so much.

    guy thing

The best part of the hoilday is hurling the christmas tree from the deck to the back yard. Must be some sort of payback for the wife's nagging that starts the day after Thanksgiving "when are you going to get the tree" J.Lockard

I too have discarded the tree, from the second floor window and will stay in the yard untouched untill spring! Happy new year.

    Hey Scott

I have heard that up by Sott Milne's area, the town allows all of the old X-mas trees to be piled on a certain beach. Then on a later date, they have a bonfire. I would love to have something like that here. Nothing like a big, fast fire to draw a community together, while offering a way to dispose of the trees.
Scott, can you elighten me here?

We keep our tree up till jan. 12. The truth is I hate to see it go. Seems as if everone changes when Xmas is gone. Wish all the smiles faces could be here year round. Happy New Year to all. And keep the Xmas smiles.

    12 days of Xmas

My mom always insisted that the tree stay up thru the 12 full days of christmas. Then we took it to the church parking lot, had a blessing and set the pile on fire.

    See Ya...

I just tossed mine to the sidewalk. I'm sure the sanitation guys will walk past it till it gets covered in snow one day soon. And then one winter day in a month or two I'll be looking outside and wondering what's different and it will hit me.....The tree's finally gone! But at least my taxes are only ten grand, so no sense complaining to the town ;-)

    Mine's outside too

But I leave the stand on it and set it up next to the bird feeders. The birds seem to enjoy the extra place to sit as they fly back and forth to the feeder.

Here's my bird list for the year so far if you're reading this Dan.

    Chickadee Black capped and Boreal

    Blue Jay

    Mourning doves (100's)

Sharp shinned hawk (peeled a mourning dove right off one of the feeders in a cloud of feathers)

    Evening grosbeaks

    Cedar Waxwing

    Cardinal

Woodpeckers, Red Headed, Blackbacked, Red Bellied, Hairy, Downy, and a Pileated up in the tree, not at the feeder

    Finches, Gold, House, and Purple.

Nuthatches, White breasted and Red breasted

    Tufted Titmouse

    Horned Lark

    Northern Flicker

    countless English Sparrows and Starlings

Hasn't been cold enough to get the Snowy owls down here yet but we usually see one or two a winter.

    Steve

I just put up 2 new bird feeders yesterday. I havent had bird feeders for years. So far no customers but I havent put an "open for business" sign up yet. I used to keep up with the feeder religiously. Don't know how I fell out of the habit. I suppose I let "getting busy" get in my way. I'd watch out for that hawk if I was you. :) WW
