my baseboard makes tapping when the heat kicks on?

Instead of "tapping" loudly for the first 5 minutes you can prolong it for 20 minutes or more (;-o). Less noise, over a longer peeiod of time...

Does it also make a similar noise on shut-down?

    Thermal Expansion

Walk along the piping and see where it may be in contact with a joist, bored hole or other contact point. There are Nylon/Delryn isolator sleeves that snap on and slide down the pipe to isolate such contact.

Of course, you could also leave the heat off. That tapping noise will be nothing compared to chattering teeth, however.

    Tapping noise

You probably can't without repealing the laws of physics. Heating=expansion and all that. But if you've got rhythm, you can hum along...

    additional checks

Also check to see if the supports under the fin tube have the plastic guides installed. Some installers don't pay attention to proper mounting of the fin tube which can make ticking noise as well as it expands. Contrary to what some believe, properly installed baseboard does not squeak, tick or make any noise.

    M'mmmm

Might want to have someone (your heating guy) check this out. While all the other posts could be right they could also be wrong, depending on how bad the ticking is. You may have a bad aquastat or one adjusted to high.
Question are the walls above the baseboard always dirty?

a can of silube, some elbow grease,a piece of cardboard, all are

quick fixes for the tic tic tic's....go along the base board and put card board under the metal that supports them, spray silube on the pipe where it dissapears into a floor or wall that is binding the tube or pipe...it won't do much for pipes that are hidden in the floor though...that requires getting at them with more progressive methods ,like... a sawzall or sheetrock saw.... depending on the ceiling construction...

    Outdoor reset

Getting an outdoor reset controller would save you fuel and quiet them down as well.

    Doubtful

The OP said when his system kicks on - so it sounds like this is a startup expansion noise issue. How would ODR make it worse Ken?

The shutdown noise might not be an issue if it cools down far slower than it heats up.

    field results

Since going to full ODR and near-constant circulation, expansion noise in my copper fin-tube is essentially gone.

Only time there is any noise is during restart after the system has cooled to room temp, e.g., after long inactivity due to solar gain and subsequent coasting (which has been often during this warm spell in SE New England). Even then it is brief and far less than the thunk-tick-tick of 180F water (deltaT = 112F), as we are only going from room temp to ~115F supply (deltaT = 47F) at these conditions.

When it does start working as constant circ during cooler weather, it is silent.

Aside: what does OP stand for? Seen it here on occasion and never have figured it out.

"Original Poster", although it can stand for a lot of things.
