above the main on which they are installed, preferably by at least 6 inches. But I've seen them work OK at lesser heights.

Main Vents
How high should the main vents be above the boiler on a one pipe steam system? I just had a plumber in to add more vents to the system and he may have cut the vents to low. Not sure if it matters.0 -
Main Vents
Will they be ok at about the same level as the main until I can get my plumber back again. I couldn't believe I actually found someone to do the work in the first place now to get him back might be a challege.0 -
Probably
but you could make a short riser out of a short pipe nipple and a coupling.

With regards to main vents, is there a good place to go to just bone up on general knowledge? We had our steam boiler replaced last year and in the old config there were three main vents near the boiler, however the new config (which has the new boiler ~10 feet away from the old spot) didn't move the old vents and actually dropped one. Plus, soMEone recently replaced one of the remaining ones with an off the shelf radiator vent from the local hardware store.
I'm just looking for advice on whether I should be pursuing making any changes. I've attached some images. In p2020315.jpg you can see where the remaining main vents are (one on the '90' towards the left of the screen and one on the 'T' which actually goes into the picture towards the jeans [too bad it wasn't my wife's underwear day when I took the photo!]); in p2010307.jpg you can see where the 3d vent used to be (on the '90' closest to the boiler ... the '90' in the rear is actually the same as the '90' in the p2020315 image).
And is a "main" essentially any horizontal-ish pipe near the boiler?0 -
Main Vents
I wish I were that confident that I woundn't mess it up. I don't even know what a coupling is. Is there a website or a book I can learn about this stuff.0 -
the main...
vents I see there would not have been much use...it looks like they are piped in w/ 3/8" pipe! almost why bother. You need some insulation there too. kpc

the main...
Yeah, insulation is definitely high on the list ... we're doing some other work on the house now so my plan was to just use the scraps from that all over the place.
With regards to the vents, in order to put them in the proper place is that a job for a professional? Should I call the installers back and ream them out for not doing it in the first place? Honestly, I'm looking for a reason to rip them a new one ... they charged us $750 to locate the new boiler where it is as opposed to where the old boiler was. So stupid on our part, but knowing what I know now I'm pretty sure we got ripped off.0 -
make yourself
Make yourself smarter by buying the steam books from this site.... Hard to see the boiler pipings in the given pixs... Was the plumber a true steam boiler pro or just a plumber that think all pipes are just pipes?0
