VAPORSTAT CONFIG
Hi guys I went to the hip and bought a vaporstat to replace pressuretrol. My copper pigtail exits the top of the LWCO and was reading pressure below the waterline.I have the option to install the vaporstat thru a secondary skim port above the water line. Being vaporstat's are more sensitive does it make a difference whether it reads above or below water and if so what is the reason?0 -
Good question Jim............
and I`m not really sure, but I`ll hazard a guess. I would think with the more expansive properties of steam over water, it should be located above the waterline, and also since your reading in ounces now, that few inches of water(if mounted there), will likely throw the actual "scale" value off.0 -
I prefer
to mount all pressure controls above the waterline. That tapping in the LWCO can allow a lot of dirt to reach the pigtail, plugging it.

My vaporstat is installed on the same T that the Weil-Mclain Model 80 installation manual indicates the pressure control/guages should be mounted. Mine are mounted on a trap as is shown in the model 80 installation manual ( http://www.weil-mclain.com/FTP/80_Boiler_Manuals/Burner Manual 550-141-935.pdf - Figure 30, Page 30, which supposably keeps them protected from the water/steam. This location places them so their mid-point is roughly at the water line. However, the pressuretol and the vaporstat installation manuals indicate that they should be above the water line. Given that these controls are potentially under water during some parts of the cycle, will they perform correctly? If not, then why does the boiler manual indicate that they should be installed in this location?
Thanks,

Thanks Steamhead my better judgment tells me above the water line is the way to go. But I just happened to go to the Library on this site and under dropheaders there is a picture of MAD DOG Sweeney's controls. He uses the LWCO and comes north about 18" with nipples then tees off with gauge on a pigtale on one side and a pigtailed vaporstat on the other. It looks sweet and surely something I can do.Do you think that by him raising the controls solves the plugging problem. Or should I just copy his tee setup and mount it to the skim tapping above the waterline.. Thanks Jim0 -
That's a pretty cool setup
but I'd be afraid someone would hit it and break something. Why not start above the waterline to begin with?
