union looks the same on both sides, which way to loosen?

Sorry, stupid homeowner question. I want to loosen an union on galvanized pipe. But I can't see any threads on either side of the nut, and the fittings that are screwed on to the pipe on either side look the same to my untrained eye. (There's a bit of corrosion, which doesn't help.) So I don't know which way to turn it...I tried both ways but it needs more force, and I don't want to force it the wrong way.

Is there a trick to knowing which way to turn it? If I could see any threads I would know what to do.

    Left=Loose-----
    Right=Tight
  • One side..............

    of the nut will be "rounded-in" towards its center, the other will not, so it can be screwed-on to the unions other half. When you find that out, its like Andy said.

    I did say it was a "stupid homeowner question", but "stupid" referred to the question, not the homeowner! I know which way to turn...let's see...lefty tighty...righty loosey...

    John you would make a good Propane guy, if you have trouble figuring it out go to the local hardware store pick one up and take it apart and back together and it will become clear
