There are many levels of automation, as well. Don't let them oversell you on features that are nice, but very expensive.

Identify what you want it to do, before you listen to the pitch for the things that you never even thought it could do. Then decide how many options actually will benefit your situation.

The payback on a well thought out automation system, ALONG WITH the proper steam system maintenance, will have a short payback period.

How short? The worse shape that you currently are in, the quicker the payback period.

    energy savings on steam system

    have a commercial bldg with 8 zones using 2psi steam for heat. would adding an automation system save energy money by shutting off boiler when no calls for heat are made as opposed to keeping preassure in boiler. building is empty 50 percent of time.
