EK ignition controller

Let me check...

Nope, the dog's still where I put him last year.

BTW, You wouldn't happen to be one of their "approved contractors:" now would you?

Knowing their claim to fame is oil, I assumed he was asking about an oil-fired unit. Does that change anything?

And no. They did nothing to me, just one of my customers (which is how I aquired the acount - because of their lack of support)- who had no heat during a very cold week in January - as direct result of their failure to honor a warranty.

Let's just say, they would not be among my first 100 boiler-maker lists for product quality or ethical dealings.

The ignition controller on my EK System 2000 has quit doing its job (blower won't blow, ignition won't ignite) and it seems to be due to a short in there somewhere (red light is kind of on sometimes, sometimes flickery, makes an intermittant clicking sound, smells a bit like bad silicon)... Question is, how do I (a lowly homeowner) get a new one??? My local EK dealer/service provider won't deal with me because I'm not a customer of theirs... Can I order this part as an individual???

    This is yet

another reason I am not their (EK's) biggest fan.

You can try, but they will only sell to their dealer network. Since homeownwers do not qualify, and many parts are not available fom wholesalers, which are all over America, you are forced to use one of their "sanctioned" contractors.

Give us the part name and number. Since EK makes only the boiler block and maybe the jacket, we may be able to cross reference it for you. Honeywell? White-Rogers?

Contrary to their notion of abject exclusivity, anyone can work on their boilers and burners. Is it a Beckett? Carlin? or Riello? burner.

Ever think it could be a gas fired unit? Did an EK delivery truck run over your dog or something? You seem to have it in for them

I have no problems with a manufacturer that only sells to trained contractors and will not sell directly to homeowners. I wish some of my wholesalers could be as disciplined.

    EK

Funny, I was not a dealer for EK products, but they sold me a part. I do have a service dept. and I hope that they wouldn't sell to a homeowner.

As far as warranty, and bad customer service... I think not! I had a customer with one of thier outdoor units. The circulator went bad because the installer had dug the base for the boiler in so it was level with the ground, and the circulator sat on the base. Ground water ran into it, burning it out. NOT EK's problem! Not only did they warranty the circulator, but they sent a rep out to meet with me and the HO. They also asked who had installed the boiler. I imagine that company had to get more training.

All this, and I was not a dealer. I did have to register to become a dealer in order to process the warranty. I still have not sold a system 2000, but if it was requested I would not hesitate. Now that I am a dealer, I get a discount off list prices as well!

One of the BEST companies I have ever dealt with.

What did you do to piss them off?

    ek 2000

when you finally get a new system manager, (the control that operates the boiler). also get what they (Energy Kinetics) call a repair service board. if in the unlikely hood of another failure. remove the manager control, install the service board and your out of trouble. the boiler will then operate like a normal one.........

Any part other than the refractory and Manager is available anywhere. And yes, I am dealer because I like their equipment and support. Why does EK get blasted for not selling parts to homeowners? Who does? Nobody I know of and with good reason.

    sys 2000 won't go

I've worked on and installed many of these systems.Put one in my mothers house with a hydrocoil LOVE THEM and they are a decent co. to deal with. there should be a test/bypass boarb in the envelope that comes with every system(and is supposed to be left in the boiler room by the boiler, not taken upstairs and tucked away in a drawer for safe keeping!)ButI'm wondering if the problem is the primary control and not the manager which can be replaced by any tech who is called. Sounds like it might be a burner problem to me,at least that should be ruled out.

    Hi all-
Sooo... I was talking about the primary ignition control, not the system manager... I assumed (we all know what happens when you assume) that it was some kind of propriatary part because it was all badged with EK logos and part #'s, when I actually pulled the thing off, I realized that it's really just the same as every other one and I replaced it with a cheap Honeywell... Problem solved, sorry to get everyone worked up...

As far as EK goes, I really love the unit, it's quieter than any boiler I've ever run into and the energy saver cycle, or whatever they call it, is a great idea and must save me some serious oil...

I do wish they'd sell me parts, but I understand why they don't... I'm not out to ruin my local heating guys, I have them come in and clean me and check everything out once a year, and would certainly have them fix anything major that comes up, BUT money certainly doesn't grow on trees, and I'm capable enough to figure out what the problem is some of the time, and if it's as simple as "pull this box off and put this box on," I'd rather keep that chunk of change for myself...

    Thanks for the help...

    Hi CP,
Glad to hear it all worked out in the end.....speaking of which: When it comes to Ken, a trip to the procto-entomologist is his next stop.

    Is it still

    in your basement?

  • FYI You dont necessarily need a service board if you encounter problems. You can first remove either of the B S or R wires on the left side and the manager will function in bypass mode and run off the high limit.
