Hazard: These boilers were manufactured for use with natural gas, but could have a blue tag incorrectly indicating to installers that they are intended for use with LP (propane) gas. If an installer connects one of the boilers to LP gas without installing a propane conversion kit, carbon monoxide (CO) can build up due to incomplete combustion, posing a risk of CO poisoning.

    Recall

I was informed by my WM sales rep about a month ago. I didn't pay much mind because I don't do LP. Sorry, I should have shared the info back then.

A month ago?! That's werid and my supply house which is one of the distribtors in Chicagoland area never mentioned this and what's worst that NO ONE from Weil Mclain informs us thru this website....
  • Man..............

Weil-McLain person? I don`t think anybody even "works" my area! I like their stuff, but even trying to get literature to give customers, is like "pulling-teeth"! Here, anyways!

    WM

I guess some areas are better than others. I got the word at a supply house and it was kind of "Oh, by the way..." and that was probably because he knew I bought so many Ultras. All W-M literature is available at their website. It's a pretty good site. All the IOM's and supplements. Tech support is best accomplished via e-mail.

    Thing is,

If you're setting up an Ultra properly with instruments, you'll catch a problem like this initially.

    I know, I know. It's "factory set", right ? :)

    LP Kits

I thought if you wanted to use LP , YOU had to install a conversion kit, not manufacturer .
No appliance I know of comes "ready" to use with LP, Including dryers, stoves. etc.
This way a confusion as such is avoided. IMO, this is not the fault of WM, but the installers.

    Double bingo!

And now WM is "recalling" a good product because some "pros" are too lazy to educate themselve's.

Homeowners will be reluctant, if not terrified, to allow the product back into their homes.

And ALL because of a blue sticker and a bunch of ignorant "pros".

What a sad commentary on the state of our profession.

    The Ultra 80....

comes from the factory in either the natural or LP version. Not exactly sure why thet don't want the 80 to be converted in the field.
Like has been said though... if your doing your homewarkand checking combustuion, there should be no problem with this. To bad there has to be a "recall" because installers can't be trusted... then again you can buy these boilers now on E-bay. I'm sure they would sell to anyone, including people who haven't a clue about P/S piping and then will trash the boiler and WM when they don't last or perform properly. Yea, and who will get sued when the improper install kills someone???

Will there be a Labor Allowance?

Who's paying for all the lost time? It's not the contractor or suppliers fault... It's heating season and now WM falls further down the secondary boiler chain, sad sad sad.

  • I talked with my supply house

I questioned my supply house regarding the very "late" notices on this "recall"..they said there wasn't a recall but a bullention (sp) send out for the INSTALLERS to check the plate to make sure its for propane or natural gas set up... Its OUR job to make sure as like we make sure which direction of the circ pump when we installing or replacing.... Now, my rant is where is Weil Mclain people on this post to clear this up?

    The WM people ...

are specifically instructed on their brand of internet etiquette....basically that means that they are not allowed to comment. I have been lead to belive that it is just Co. policy for them.
That doesn't mean that they aren't watching... they are!! I have seen posts under alias's that I know are people from WM..:-)
It has to be very difficult for those people sometimes, seeing things that you cannot respond too because your hands are figuratively tied....
I hope that this clears some of that up for you.

    Closed Minds...............

    Floyd,

It is a shame that a company like Weil Mcclain listens to the legal dept before they listen to there technical dept. The main tool I use in learning hydronics is this web site. Dan's web site. Debating the technical issues, asking questions on how to do things and posting pictures of past jobs is how you learn. The Weil MCclain people are severly handicapped.

    Ya know....

I really can't say that I blame them. Many times discussions, if you can call them that, on this website are a no win for a Co., espec. if there is a situation with one of their products. What is said by them is often taken or mistaken in fifty diferent ways... I would think that you, John would know exactly what I mean by that!!!
Most times the less ammo. you give out the better off you are...

    What lost time ?

Are you kidding me ? If you got a NG labeled LP and fired it up you'd know within minutes W/O TEST EQUIPMENT. C'mon, is this REALLY recall material ? Any competent installer/ service tech would catch this so fast the block wouldn't even get to limit temp.

I'm not saying it's OK that units got mislabeled, but s#*t happens.

It's a bigger issue to me that suppliers sell to unqualified installers and want no responsibilty for problems when they do. Just selling "boxes" is a good way to trash a good product.

If you punch in this link...cpsc.gov...then hit "press room" on the left side of the page. Then hit "press releases", and scroll down on the left to the text box where you can type in a manufacture's name, (or three or four letters of it), and get a list of all of the bulletins for that manufacture. The descriptions are pretty good...pick the one you want and print it. You'll not have to rely on the Gas Company interpretation or the local supply house or rep. This is a government site, so I sure there's an easier way to do it...but this works.

    Right

You know right away that you've lost time on a bid job and that you'll be paying over time to your tech to run to the supply and HOPEFULLY be able to pick up the conversion kit and do the change over.

It is a problem. When you have a compeditive bid ... time = money.

    I guess I've been lucky

I've had a problem with two Ultras upon fire-up. The supply house delivered another to the jobsite within an hour the first time. The second time they delivered the part in the same time frame. Maybe I'm special, but that's good service.

We can swap an Ultra in 75 minutes, including the uncrating and re-crating. I don't know about you, but I don't figure my quotes so tight that I can't eat a couple of hours once in a while.

I'd like to know the percentage of boilers that this actually happened to. I'm betting it's minute, and lawyers are behind the "recall".

    RE:

    Floyd,

I just want to be the best I can be. I am willing to put up with all of the negative comments because in the end I find myself smarter and better. That is important to me. To me it is a sign of the deteriation of America. Companies like Weil MCclain are scared to let employees speak there mind because someone might use the comment to sue the company. I can understand why Weil MCclain doesn't let its employees speak here. That doesn't make it right. I have gotten in trouble for speaking my mind on a couple of times. I have been threatened by Radiantec's laywers for speaking against them because I thought that they were using questionable practices. I still do.

People are scared to speak there minds in todays lawyer infested America. They are scared to try new things to. It is a bad enviroment for invention. With Global warming we need these inventors even more. Sometimes I don't feel like I am living in a free country anymore. I like what America started out as. This country was great 100 years ago. I don't like the direction this country is going in. I try and do the right thing. I am fighting to keep America free like it was 100 years ago.

As far as this recall thing goes. I have spoken with a rep from Weil MCclain and I feel they are handling the situation fine. Some units were taged wrong. Mistakes happen. They happen to our company to. They went to all of the supply houses and checked and retaged. That sounds good to me.

    Glenn Stanton

It's too bad that WM doesn't have a proactive rep monitoring and communicating on this site like Glenn Stanton does for Burnham. His support probably helps to gain new customers and keep old ones. He is a very comforting resource.
