Our Spirovent seems to have quit working - Ideas?

a WHOLE lot of lime inside of a closed loop system, unless you don't have a closed loop system, i.e. hidden leaks...

Also, pinholed expansion tank points to the same potential problem, or non oxygen barrier tube within the system.

Our Spirovent seems to have quit working - Ideas?

This morning I was awaken by the sound of a surging circulator pump due to a pin-holed expansion take that services our small radiant floor system. After replacing the expansion tank and turning on the feed water I was surprised to not hear air venting via the Spirovent. Thinking that it might be my 50 plus year old ears failing me, I turned on the system only to be greeted with surging pump but no venting of the system. Since the Spirovent is paired with the pressure tank just upstream of the circulator this has never been a problem from day one.

The nipple at the top of the Spirovent is just a bit crusty with mineral deposit (we have very hard water) and I'm wondering if that might be the problem. Is there a way to clean this up without disassembly? Any other ideas of what might be causing the problem.

    Thanks for any informed replies.

It was a tight space and a tight fit but I was able to unscrew the top of the Spirovent. Sure enough air would not pass though the mineral-caked vent. After soaking for ~15 minutes in LimeAway air is beginning to make it through. We should have heat tonight if no snags occur along the way.

Is there a lot of visible corrosion on your system?
