No.
Energy Star requires performance significantly above the norm.
The norm for small residential steam was established LONG ago.0 -
Energy star steam boilers
Not sure about gas, but believe it or not Burnham has an 86% oil fired steam boiler that meets the energy star ratings.0 -
That's the MEGA-STEAM
yes, EnergyStar on steam can be done. Unfortunately, Burnham has not certified the Mega-Steam with a power gas burner. We're waiting.....
The Smith 8 series residential boilers are Energy-Star rated too, and available in water or steam, oil or gas. Not sure if all variations are Energy-Star rated though, waiting for the rep to get back to me.

I was thinking the H.B. Smith but it is not asmopheric, so I went searching and I have yet to find an 85% atmospheric. The local gas company gives rebates for 82% ratings on steam here in Mass, at least they were.Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.

Atmospheric boilers
are by nature less efficient than their wet-base, power-burner siblings. Not only does the power burner mix air and gas more efficiently, but the firing zone in a wet-base unit is completely surrounded by water-backed cast iron except where the burner is mounted. On an atmospheric boiler the base is relatively open, and you lose a lot of heat there. Ever wonder why you can't install these boilers on combustible floors?
The wet-base design offers an additional advantage: if you're tired of your gas utility jacking up rates to fund golden parachutes for its CEOs, you can switch to oil by having a pro change the burner (and installing a tank if needed).

the one question I have is this. I thought the flue passages would not allow proper scrubbing of the b.t.u. s if it was fired into an oil boiler. If the GB is set to fire gas are there baffles between the sections to slow the gas going through and would these need removed to fire oil in these boilers. I thought the big dual fuel boilers are always less efficent on gas firing then they are on gasCost is what you spend , value is what you get.

A power gas burner
makes a flame similar to that of an oil burner, and the flue gases go thru the passages the same as those from an oil burner. I don't know of extra baffles being needed, at least in residential sizes.
