Coilex added to Weil?

Greetings,
I have a 1993 Weil M with the tankless coil. Tech was over Friday replacing circulator and we got to talking about the design of the boiler. He reccommends having them install a Coilex 40 gal tank and removing the coil. He says hot water and heat disribution will be much better and no worries about the coil failing or the gasket leaking. Plus lifetime warranty on the new tank. This would cost me $1950.00 total. Does this sound like a good idea?

    Coilex tank

Not sure of what you speak and not familiar with this tank, but why would you remove the coil. An indirect water heater, and Weil has a good one, will give you lots of hot water and operating efficiency. It is a tank within a tank and has no coils or gaskets to worry about.

Wouldn't you still have a gasket where the coil used to be ?

Hot water would improve with the indirect , but the heat distribution too ? Not sure about that .

Are you having problems with the coil ? We usually add what's called an aquabooster to a boiler with a coil . It's a storage tank and the coil makes the hot water .

    It sounds like,

He wants to take the tankless coil out of the boiler and install a indirect storage tank. I am not farmiliar with the brand he is talking about, but this is a better more efficient system than a tankless. Your boiler doesn't have to maintain temp any longer to keep up with demand for hot water. It will fire only when the tank calls to be reheated.Hope this helps.

what your tech said makes sence..

the Coilex is a word for indirect as a generic word i am thinking... by removing the domestic coil you would change the tri aquastat out for another control, for the weil Mclaine. that control resets to room temp and then bangs back up ,wheras the triaquastat is going to see a temp change any time the domestic water hot side calls and it has a adjustable differential ...it, the controller is often set and when the boiler water temp at the point in the coil drops due to the heat exchange at the coil...it fires the boiler...as part of its stradgey it bangs back and forth using partial differential reset... partial differential reset isnt every economists favorite however depending on a few variables such as the domestic coil it indeed makes sence.

Yes, that is what the tech suggests. Coilex is the brand name - all stainless lifetime warranty. The tech told me the gaskets fail very often on the coil flange causing rusting of the studs, then they break off when he goes to replace the gasket. Sometimes they come out with an ez-out, sometimes not. He would replace the coil cover with a new plate of some sort. We get good HW at the sinks, but in the winter the shower runs out within 5-10 minutes, he says this new set up would fix this. Maybe replacing the gasket as a maintenance item would be a good idea?

So if I understand correctly, the aquastat on the weil which has a hi, lo and diff would be replaced by another type that would control water temp going into the Coilex and the convectors? It sounded good when the tech was explaining it. Does $1950.00 sound like a fair price for this? I looked it up, the Coilex 40 gal model sells for about $1200.00, so $750.00 to install.

    If you

stick around and see what he has to do and parts he has to install other than the tank itself you come back and tell me if $750 is too much, don't forget the overhead that is involved, you know shop on wheels that shows up at your doorstep, the help and insurances etc. How many doctors will show up at your house and for how long at $750?

I wasn't saying I thought it was too much, I got no idea what he has to strip off and put on. Sometimes too low a price means trouble later on. I just wanted some guidance. Thanks.

He's giving you good advice. Prices vary from State to State and area to area but thats sounds in the ballpark.

If you have a good relationship with him then I would do it.

    Good Luck

    Scott

Yes, we have had a service contract with this company for the last 10 years and they have always repaired equipment promptly. They even replace parts when they do the cleaning/tune up if they think they could cause trouble later on. Thanks for all the advice guys. This is a fairly big investment so I wanted to get some feedback on it.
