I just have to do something my supply house bills are up my trucks are always missing critical items. Then productivity slows as does the profits. I dont think you can eliminate theft we all try and hire the best people so we can avoid that. But with cost of materials today if they arent acounted for how can you bill them out. I would like to find a system that will keep track of all this if Fergison can inventory 300 shops why cant I find a system to inventory 5 trucks and one shop.

    Hi Mike

I am still using Quick Books 2003 contractors addition. I performed the inventory 1 Time and as long as I enter all sales, It automatically tracks Parts used QTY left etc... Sometimes I get so busy, the last thing I want to do is inventory, But it can save you money in the long run. I do not, and I repete do not track any fittings and misc stuff. I probably should, but I am more interested in the more costly items.

    The customers like....

The one where the part is on the truck. (Trust me!)

I try to keep what I would consider "normal stock" on hand at all times. PRV'S, Backflow Preventers, relief valves, expansion tanks an assortment of replacement gas valves, (though most aren't needed!) and controls to get me on my way on a Saturday night. The finer details can be worked out at a normal wage and ASAP.

A couple of air vents and some ball valves and boiler drains go quite a way too.

Try to figure what you will ABSOLUTLY need in an emergency and keep it on hand. Tough call in alot of circumstances....but Alan Mercurio has a great list for oil equipment lurking somewhere on Oil Tech Talk, and I believe that Tim McElwain posted one for a gas service van too. Chris

    It's just me JCA, but

Space on the E250 is limited. I'll be darned if I stock ANY expansion tank!!! At the shop, no problem, but I think you know how I feel. My scenario is that we are still doing A/C, in the middle of winter. Space is at a premium. Although I do stock prv's, It's not in the least of my priorities. I'll get the water in the boiler for 1 hr to 1 to 2 days......... I agree with you that we want to get em up and running with what we have and go home to the family....:-)
