Just Curious

The other night I was watching the latest This Old House episode and they were in the basement draining the boiler, and they showed a picture of the old boiler. The 3" or 4" black pipe/cast iron supply line on top of the boiler, was joined together by what looked like a Fernco connector rather than a threaded connection. Is that an acceptable way to make a boiler connection? I am not a pro,but I wouldn't think you could use that type of connection in a pressurized system.I would appreciate any comments.Thank you.
