Prestige boiler & radiant floor WW

We installed a Smart tank 50 for hot water. The manifold n the boiler panel is for the radiators. The panel on the left over the old oil tank is for the radiant floor. The husband mentioned to his wife when he saw the old gravity piping gone, "Now where am I going to hang my shirts in the Laundry room?" I overheard him and cut a section of the old pipe and hung it to the side for him. They loved it. A lttle good will goes a long way. Not completely done but close. WW

Almost finished
Waiting for the GC to do stuff and get out of my way. This family is the nicest I've worked for in a long time. They are putting a 2 story addition to a small house because they got 3 boys ages 7 through 12. The house is carpeted with baseball bats and hockey sticks. They loved their existing hydronic heat in the rooms where it worked but some rooms had large cast iron rads while others had copper fin baseboard. The performance was inconsistant at best. I also found 2 cast iron rads piped in series. Hewack! We installed radiant floor with plates in the addition. Both floors! Replaced the existing cast iron beastie boiler with a mod con Prestige. Replaced the existing baseboard with cast iron rads, and cut out all of the old gravity piping in the basement and ran to all of the radiators with a mnanifold and Multicore tubing. I'll try to post a before picture

Nice
nice job wayne.
The home owners will be please.
Q: You have two fittings, which I can't tell what they are?
On the pri. piping with the boiler drain, and above that, on the return run from the manifold
over the old oil tank?
Is the oil tank staying?
Once again nice change over.

Thanks Singh
On the primary loop that is a Spring loaded flow control valve. (HT-1 from B & G.) Since I am using a common return with the primary loop and the indirect water heater I wanted to prevent any ghost flow up the seconday loop return pipes. I use the port not used to put a boiler drain. Since the B & G HT style flow control has a knob that opens the check valve with the flick of a wrist it's easy to drain from where ever it's located. On the radiant loop return line is a circuit setter without it's knob. It broke. I gotta fix that.

Nice work Wayne.
I think I should be getting a royalty check in the mail for the "blue board"....it IS our trademark. 5% for you...friendly contractor discount.
What do you think of the Prestige? Inquiring minds want to know. Last but not least..I hope you were joking about Jr.. Tell him how much money we make! (According to the customers, we're milionaires...each and every one of us!) Nice work bud. Chris0 -
What tha
You're kidding right? I invented the Blue board. Gotta patent right here. Swearto God! And to think I've been thinking of hassling Clammy for his blue boards. Ha! The Architech complimented me for the blue and the way it offsets the color of the copper. Pshaw. Thanks for the kind words. I was on the fence about trying the Prestige about a year ago and then Dan Foley and his merry men tried one and said they liked it. (He likes it, Hey Mikey!) Now I'm in the tank over it. No troubles so far. Uses the same microprocessor as the WM Ultra. It's made by Honeywell Europe. (Didnt know they had a division there) It's quiet and the heat exchanger has very little pressure drop across it. The 110 used to come with a 007 in it but they now have a Grundfos 15-58FC so you can change speeds and have a flow check in the circ. Price is very good too. Almost Munchkin like. I've always liked the Tri tube Smart indirect with the tank within a tank technology, so I tended think well of them to begin with. WW

Good job!
Great work as always WW!
Did your Prestige come with an FC or did you install it?
I have not had one yet and was told by Jim Nicholas that they were having problems with the flow check and had eliminated them.
We use alot of the FC versions and have not had any issues as of yet.
It would help out to have the check in many of our applications.

The circulator
in the boiler comes with a flow check in the discharge of the circ. The first one I did last Fall did not have one and I had ghost flow in the Summer when the domestic hot water operated until I replaced it with a circ that had one. I had not heard of any problems with the FC or had any. Thanks for the kind words. The cusatomers are very pleased. WW

Kevin, I used
multicore tubing which I ran to adaptors sold by Uponer that are R-20 x 3/4 mpt. The old rads I just connected to them in the basement just before they went up into the living area and the new rads I Piped down through the floor with 3/4 x 8 in nipples and put the adaptor on just beneath the floor. By the way Kevin. How far are you from Bath Maine? I know an architech who is planning a big radiant job with boilers, radiant floors and panel rads all going into an old church he is turning into a condo. Sounds way cool. WW

Do you mean the boiler HX? It is stainless steel and is positioned vertically so the condensate is rinsing the interior of the HX all the time it is condensing. This is supposed to cut down on any cleaning it may need. I hope that is true. I hate to clean if I don't have to. Time will tell. WW

The architech is from down here. I don't know what his connection is to up there but he's about to spens a bunch of money. If I see a post from Al I'll try to remember to tell him. Sounds like a cool project. And as for you Mr Milne, Your Lawyers don't scare me. (ulp!) :O.

Beautiful install! Is that the job with the flue termination issue? I see the PVC entering what looks like used to be a chimney. How did you resolve that?0 -
No
It's a very similar job though. That has not been resovled yet, but the GC has calmed the HO's down, And now that they have heat and seen the rest of my work and they can see I'm no hack, things have calmed down. The GC is talking about painting it to match the wall behind it. Something I suggested from the start but somehow was not received as well. I gotta work on my manner of persuasion I guess. Thanks for the kind words. I still need to go back and tie up the loose ends, but everyone has to have heat so I'm splitting jobs up more than I like. The HO's don't mind so much because I can't ask for the final payment until I'm tottaly done. Hmmmm. WW
