no2 hoffman main vent spitting

I installed a no2 hoffman vent on my main. 12 inches off a tee, more than 15 inches away from the end of the main.
I noticed that the main vent is spitting water. I read that it's reccomended to install a y-strainer before the main vent, which i don't have.
I also noticed in the glass that the water level bounces a bit.
My goal was to vent my mains faster. I had a hoffman #4a previously as a main vent, but it didn't vent the mains quickly.
Should I install a y-strainer or does it sound like i have another problem?
If I need a y-strainer can i buy one from a plumbing supply house? I'm in New Jersey.
