Since a heat pump only works well down to 40* out side temperature. A heat pump only moves heat compaired to producing heat which is more economical in moderate climates.
Your key to efficancy is heat loss. Tighting up on the building and your new ducts...

To keep ceiling heat or install heat pump w/ducting
Thanks for the help guys. I'm pretty ignorant about all of this and am just learning.
My wife and I just bought our first house and it has ceiling heat (built in 1967). My question is this: is it worth it in energy savings to convert the house to a heat pump? I live in a mild climate in Eugene, OR, there is a crawlspace underneath the house that ducting could run in, and the house runs on electricity only.
I've heard many mixed reviews about ceiling heat in a 1500sqft house. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.0 -
What is ceiling the ceiling, electricity or water? If water, what is the heat source?0 -
The ceiling is heated by electricity. Anothing thing that I forgot to mention is that during the house inspection (we're still in escrow) the ceiling heat in three rooms did not respond. I figured that if we are going to plan on moving to a central air system, we should do it now. However, would it be economical in the long run? I'd have to install ducting, too.0 -
Heat pump over resistant heat Yes
But I do not really like Scorched air. If you go scorched Heat pump two stage unit with resistant backup and a variable speed blower. That will be the most comfortable you can be with Scorched air. It should be money in the bank in just a few years to use a Heat Pump.

Why not
do hydronic radiant floor heat, and a high-velocity A/C system with mini-ducts? These would give excellent comfort and efficiency if done right.
