lwco

Some time ago, I read a thread on The Wall about this exact topic and this is what I decided: My circs are located above the boiler so I put the lwco in a tee above the level of the circs. That way the circs and the boiler are protected.

    lwco

I want to install a lwco on a hw system. It has three zones plus an indirect. My question is, what brand do you recomend, and where is the best place in the system to install it? Thanks for any feedback.

  • I use McDonnell & Miller, and I have nothing positive or negative to say about them as a product.

As far as where to install,..

On a retrofit, I generally use my boilers 3/4 inch tapping for the relief valve, and come out of the boiler with a 3/4 IPS tee keeping the relieve valve vertical comming off the branch of the tee.

I like that location because its common to the boiler water and cannot be shut off in any way by a gate or ballvalve.

Ideally if your boiler has any free tappings where your low water cut off probe can get as deep into the boiler water as possible, thats best.

On a new installation, a tee immediately from the supply, before the piping goes to my pumping away module is where I put it.

Im not sure if these are the best possible locations, I dont install all that many. Im curious to see how others answer.

  • Good move Bill............

I never thought of protecting the pumps, but it makes good sense. I usually try to get one-in within 12" above the top of the boiler. I don`t like putting it right in the section, could be too much movement in-there, but that`s just me!

    Return side

About 1 to 2 foot above the boiler. I could care less about the pump, it's there to protect the home owner from a line blowing out or the vessel rupturing at hi steam pressure.... I do like "Guard Dog" by McDonnel Miller. 3/4" npt easy to wire and so far very reliable.
