  • Question for all of you...

I resently posted a question regarding a rust out hole in some my burner tubes on my WM boiler and I had a stupid idea, but I am beyond that. Replacement tubes @ the local supply house were only $6.00 ea.

But the question is: When the service tech saw the holes, he pointed out that would cause for excessive gas consumstion. I responded that, how can that be, the size of the orfice that supplied that tube didn't change, the tube can dispirse and burn the gas only at the rate the orfice supplies, no matter how many holes the tube has.

His responce was "more holes, more gas"

This is sort of a dead issuse because I replaced all the tubes, but was my line of thinking correct????

    While the rate of

gas will not change, in that you are correct, the effectivity of the flame, the temperature, and combustion characteristics will be less than ideal.

As a result it is possible you will use more gas to transfer the same amount of energy through your heat exchanger to get the same output because of less efficient combustion.

Basically longer run times and more wasted fuel from inefficient combustion. So you and the tech are right in your own way, and wrong in the reasoning.

    That's what the Thermostat does.

It all depends on the type of distribution system you have. And how low you let the temp go, and for how long you let it stay there.
For example, If you have Flourescent tube lamps, it's cheaper to keep them on vs. on and off everytime you walk out of the room. It takes alot more energy to light them than to keep them lit.
Same with heating systems such as high mass radiant. It takes alot more to get that slab up to temp on a cold day than to keep it there.(although it will hold the heat longer as well)
FHA responds much faster under theses circumstances. And baseboard falls in the middle. This is the $64,000 question with no absolute answer.
