Vitorond Riello Question

We installed a Vitorond in a church that was adding about 3,600 sq ft of floor space a couple years ago. Panel rads were installed in the new area and the two furnaces that served the existing building were replaced with a single, zoned air handler. Their oil consumption stayed the same even though they doubled the sq ft of heated space. For what it's worth, the combustion analyzer says it runs between 87-88% consistently.

So I'm the proud owner of a new Viessmann Vitorond. The install went perfectly and everything looks great. I'll try to post some before and after pictures soon.
I have a quick question about it though -
I hear what I believe is the Riello motor turn on, then 10-15 seconds later that token roar of the flame burning. On the old setup (WM/Carlin) I thought that the motor spinning first/burner lites later was a bad thing b/c it dumped a bunch of unburned oil in the chamber. Sometimes that delay would even cause a puff of nasty smoke on the old system.
Is that normal on the Vitorond/Riello startup - a delay like that? And is that okay? I assume it's misting oil into the chamber, right?
Any Wall insight is appreciated...0 -
Normal on the Vitoflame 100...
There is a pre-purge where the boiler establishes a draft, before ignition. Some burners also post-purge to get all the combustion gases out. I presume that the Riello will also have a pre-purge.0 -
Andrew...
Your Riello is working correctly. During that 10 seconds where just the motor is running, a couple of things are going on.
The fan is establishing a good draft and the chamber is being purged of any residual fumes.
The oil is being pumped up to full pressure (probably 150-175 PSI) BEFORE the spark is put to it. There is a solenoid valve that is closed and is not allowing any oil to be sprayed into the chamber until the spark comes on.
If the noise of the combustion is too loud for comfort, you may be able to eliminate the barometric damper; a draft test will let you know if that is an option.

Wow, Thanks...
Thanks Ragu -
I had no idea so much was going on in that 10 seconds!
...it's good to know that is normal operation.
I've gotten used to the new sounds so the operational noises aren't a huge issue. The whole setup is so much quieter than the system it replaced - I'm actually looking forward to the cooler weather now to really see (feel) the system at work!0 -
Riello Technology
Andrew, here are a few more thoughts. When your Riello's transformer kicks in, it only sparks for 3 seconds. If there is no light-off, it will lock out on safety. Average American burners have a safety timing of up to 45 seconds where they could be pumping oil into the chamber with no light-off. It's hard to flood a Riello.
Since the transformer only sparks for 3 seconds, there is minimal wear and tear on it. I've only replace 1 Riello combination Primary Control/Transformer in 12 years, and I probably have 150 Riellos that I have installed. Additionally, I have NEVER replaced a set of Riello electrodes.
My opinion is that most of the upgrades that other burner manufacturers have added to their burners are an imitation of the Riello concepts. I'm glad you have the real McCoy! George Lanthier who posts here as The Firedragon wrote the Riello technical manuals for the U.S.
