i am looking for a remote sensor for install in a bathroom because my current honeywell 5-2 programmable keeps blanking out and resetting to 99'. any suggestions.

this is on a multiple zone hot water system with honeywell zone valves and taco circulator. it needs to be a sensor that can handle condensing humidity and link up to a programmable stat

    The end of an era...

After a spectacular run of 50+ years of being the most popular and recognized piece of heating and cooling equipment, the mercury switch T87 Honeywell Round thermostat is being retired. It has been replaced by two new Round stats that are the same size, and as far as the homeowner is concerned, work the same way, by twisting the dial. The new stats are mercury free, much more accurate and come with a heat-only or heat/cool subbase. You no longer will need all those Q539 subbases! Only one color, Premier White.

No more heat anticipator, either. Just take the stat off the subbase, and set the dip switches to the settings for the type of system it is being wired to. Out of the box, they are set for 6 CPH for forced air. They will work with oil, gas, steam, hydronic, forced air, electric and the heat/cool model will work with up to a 1 stage heat, 1 stage cool heatpump. DO NOT USE ON MILLIVOLT SYSTEMS! If your customer has a millivolt system, use any VisionPro programmable or FocusPro Non-programmable.

    Terminals: Heat only, R&W
    Heat/Cool: R, Rc(Factory Jumper),O,B,Y,W,G
    Subbase Switching: Heat only: None

    Heat/Cool: Fan:On/Auto System: Heat/Off/Cool

    Part numbers: T87K1007 (Heat Only)
    T87N1000 (Heat/Cool)
    T87N1026 (Heat/Cool, Easy to See)

Available from any Honeywell distributor. Go to www.customer.honeywell.com, and type in the numbers for a spec sheet. Existing orders will be filled with the old product while supplies last, once the inventory of mercury switch stats runs out, the new mercury free units will be substituted.

    Bill...

I saw a show on T.V. last year about Industrial Design. They said that the T87 was the most recognized manufactured product of the 20th century.

I started to read your post and thought you were talking about Bob Barker retiring from The Price is Right.

He'll hang up his microphone after 35 years as the host of "The Price Is Right" and 50 years overall in television.

    Thanks for the update.

The T87F has certainly done its job.

    question for Bill???????

    hi bill,

can you direct us as to which series of currently available honeywell t-stats allow for the programmable entry of dates (start & end) for daylights savings time rather than the old 'on/off' of set dates?

    thanx so much,

    ss

How closely will the new stats maintain temp?

    VisionPro...

The Touch screen models handle daylight savings time automatically. The 5-1-1 & 5-2 are manual. Thanks for using the our products!

    Holding temperature.

They use an electronic sensor, close to +- 1 degree. Since they are a basic stat, they are not tested to the aacuracy levels of the VisionPro & Focus Pro. If the customer was OK with the older T87, they will not have any problems with the mercury-frees. Thanks for using Honeywell products!

    IAQ

What is the diff. between the vison pro and the new IAQ stat Bill.

  • I have been using the new thermostats for awhileand think they are great. The only problem I have is on a steam system. When the low limit calls for heat it drops out power to the digital tt. Is there anoth

    New t-87

    Bill,

I have started using these, and they seem to work great! I've only installed three so far, but have five more to finish up a couple of installs.

My only question is: How do you remove the thermostat from the base!?

I know it sounds stupid, but I have looked the thing over and can't figure it out. I didn't feel so bad when I asked my wholesaler and they couldn't figure it out either!

    Thanks,

    Scott

    honeywell focus pro 6000

I have steam heat with a t-87, works great. Now I'd like to install the programmable and don't see that diagram in the wiring page. Any ideas? I tried heat only, normally open zone, wires to c and rc. Do I need a jumper to y? wife'll kill me tomorrow if not working again after waiting nearly 3 weeks for Burnam to send me a new smoke canopy.

    Hi, Scott.

Just hold the stat in one hand, subbase in the other, and pull apart gently. They will open easily.

    Heat only?

If it's set for heat only, r&w should be hooked up. Rc is for a second transformer, for example if you have steam heat and air-handler type air conditioning. Y is the cooling relay.

Do the new ones make any noise?

Do the new stats make any noise when they turn on/off? I always liked the mercury T-87 because they were silent.

I'm in the process of completing a new hot water boiler install/house remodel project where every room is its own zone. The standard digital thermostats always annoyed me with the loud clicking noise they make each time they cycled. (Not such a big deal in a hot air system with all the other noises made, but with a silent hot water system it is very distracting - especially since every bedroom has a thermostat in it.)

So when I heard last year that the mercury T-87 was being discontinued, I went out and bought 15 of them. I had to go to 6 different stores since most only had 2 or 3 each.

    Mexico??

    Bill,

Not looking to break horns, but are these things made in Mexico too?

Unfortunately the reliability of Honeywell's controlls has diminished so much since they stopped saying "Made in USA".

What I used to install to save money in fuel now costs extra money when it only lasts a couple of years.

Please, please consider reliabilty before profits...

    The only difference....

In fifty Plus years of yeomans service, I think it's had a great run. The only difference between any of them was the way you turned the face. I replaced 2 on Friday...one turned one way, the "new one" turned the other way.

What am I to do with my thermostat wrench now Bill? (Ask Scott, that one freaked him out when he learned about it!) Chris

    Here's an idea...

Use it for installing scale sized 1 pipe steam systems on O scale model railroad layouts!

    Hi, Ed.

The new T87's are made in Golden Valley, Minnesota, which is still in the US, unless Bullwinkle sold it to the Canadians!

New IAQ has a TON of extra features...

Humidification control, de humidification control, ventilation control, all the same features as the VisionPro touch screen, 3-wire communicating stat save wiring time, with all wiring done on the module in the mechanical space. Second revision will have forced air zoning & remote communications via touch tone phone. Stay tuned!!!

    Dehum control

    Bill,
We recently had a job where we tried to use the stat with Dehum control I don't remember the model#. The problem we had was the stat would not allow simontaneous (how do you spell that)heating and cooling. Our intention was to have the Dehum mode activate the cooling and use the W1 to maintain room temperature, this is fairly typical in commercial applications. The stat would not call on the heat to maintain room temp when the dehum was calling. Any solutions for this?

    remote sensors

The Touch screen VisionPros and the New Visionpro IAQ have remote sensor capability. The 5/2's and 5/1-1's do not have that capability. What model number is it? The trade models are battery powered, and should not blank out. If it's a retail model, something is pulling to much voltage, and blanking out the screen.

    It probably was the TH8321...

That unit can provide dehumidification control, using the AC & heat. The new VisioPro IAQ's dehumidifier control works with an actual whole-house dehumidifier like our DH90.

    How about a T86?

I remember seeing a T86 thermostat many years ago in an old house. When were they discontinued?

    Say goodbye for me, BillW!

Dad NEVER accepted anything less that a T-87. Back when equipment mfr's. sent the el-cheapo stats with the equipment, he would take his foot and crush it! I wish I knew how many T-87's I have installed in my life, but has to be well in the thousands. And I have one in my home today, as well as an 'ole 1st gen. Chronotherm that I saved from a job.

    The old T87

The original T87f was the best, we stocked 4 in each truck and 10 on the shelf, they were very reliable, and you could dial a temp in to the half degree. When the color changed it seams like the quality went down hill, I replaced more of the off white ones in the last 3 years than the previous 20 years of the gold one. I guess its time to retire it if the quality isn't their any more.. Barry

    T86 stat

I started working in a wholesaler in 1977 and the t86 was retired at that time...so it was pre 1977 if that helps.Barry

    T87F

I recently found a glitch in the Party. I installed a 5000 series stat and she called me to inform me she was coming after me with a firearm. She hadn't slept for three nights. The reason. . . relays. Every time the stat cycled it closes a relay, "click". It woke her up multiple times a night. I still had a 594 on the truck and promply installed it. Bedrooms, the most popular location for a thermostat in a modern starter castle.
  • I think

the T86 was the original version of the T87. It was a heating-only stat, whereas the T87 could handle cooling too.
