WM Burner tubers

Josh, I agree with your line of think, I was just reaching for an ez fix. This is an old boiler and the supply house is having a hard time finding the burner tubes.
The service guy I called for an unrealted problem didn't even notice the tubes when he removed them, I had to point out the condition of the tubes to him. The first thing he said when I told him I had a Weil-Mclain is, "I sorry for you" When I asked if he does a lot of work on boilers, "boilers, furnace, same thing, one has a blower and you have a pump & water" Later in conversation, he admitted he has never installed a boiler in his life.
Boy I have a lot of confindance in the service guy!!!
I am in schorched air country!!!
My father used to do plumbing/heating, and I use to be his grunt. I knew more about this boiler that this guy.
But thanks for your imput.

WM burner tubes
I have a WM HE series 2 nat. gas boiler with 10 burner tubes. In this years cleaning I have noticed that at the end of majority of the tubes a small rust threw spot, about the size of a pencil eraser, no larger. These are just plain steel, not SS. Can this be brased to fill in the hole or would something like JB Weld work, with the heat?
I don't see a large flame comming out of the hole, but it dosen't look like the hole would be good. And for the most part the flame is pretty even.
If I had to spring for a new set of tubes, what would be a ball park cost? The tube that holds the pilot is ok.0 -
Fred, one thing is for sure. You can't leave the tubes the way they are.
Second, JB Weld will NOT work in this situation. It doesn't belong anywhere on a Boiler or Hydronic heatin system.
I also wouldn't recommend brazing. You could warp the tube and cause poor combustion.
I am not sure what the cost of new tubes are for that particular model but my advice is to pay up on this one. Go to Weil-Mclains website and find your local rep. Your rep can tell you who you might buy the tubes from locally.0 -
Burner Tubes
You may also want to check the Bracket in the back of the burner chamber that the tubes sit on for rust and deterioration. I had a major horro story this week. Walked into a basement of a house that we were installing a new Buderus wall hung boiler for the hydroair system we were installing. When i got into the basement it smelled like flue gas. as I crossed the basement the steam boiler kicked on and sounded like a flame thrower. I pulled the front panel off to find the whole front compartment filled with flame. After shutting it off I found 2 burner tubes droped on the floor and the entire back hanger and one end of a burner tube had rusted away. So DO NOT mess around with trying to fix a burner tube it is not worth it. The basement of this house was filled with carbon monoxide which could have killed everyone in the house.0 -
