Bent Baseboard Hot Water Radiator Fins.

I just had a room added to my house with hot water baseboard radiator heat. A large number of the fins had the bottoms completly bent over onto each other (close to 3/4's.) The sub contractor who installed it told the contractor that they did that on purpose to increase the heat output. This does not make sense to me. How compromised is my system now and what does that mean for future problems down the line.

    Creative

I must say the subs response was creative. I think you need to be sure the BB was installed high enough above the finished floor for good airflow. The good folks at Slant Fin spec about 4 1/2 inches. If the spacing is there and the fins are just bent just bending them all back straight will work. They are designed to be straight so the maximum of air will flow past them picking up heat. Bent fins reduce heat output because they reduce airflow.

"Increase the heat output?" What a crock of crap!!!!

  • get it replaced

What a bulls---er! I would have it replaced, since you are paying for a new radiator, not a damaged one... Rebending the fins will come lose and make all kind of noises, etc... Hope ur contractor installed ur new addition correctly into the existing system..

Thanks for the reply. I suspect that since there was baseboard trim behind it when it was installed, then later removed, they were bent in order to get the cover on, which does not really fit that well.

    Baseboard

    Kevin:

You didn't mention what brand of Baseboard you had installed. The responses you received from the folks here on the Wall are very accurate. If it is Slant/Fin baseboard, please feel free to give us a call and we can walk you through some repairs. I would not let this person completely off the hook. But that doesn't solve your problem. Give us a call 1-800-873-4346.

    Best Regards and good luck,

Thanks I will, they also installed one of your toe kicks in my kitchen, so chances are they used your other product as well, I will check before I call.
