Uneven Steam Heat Distribution between Front and Rear Apartments

I have a six unit building with steam heat. No tenant has complained this season, but I am concerned that the rear line may not be getting enough heat, or, if it is, it is because I have turned the thermostat up too high, causing the front line to be over-heated. Is there some way to better balance heat/steam distribution between the front and rear lines, such as installation of a booster pump for the rear line?

One problem may be that air valves for the rear line are not working, as I do not hear them hiss. If this is in fact a problem, I think that replacing the valves is only a partial solution.

    Just venting here

The steam pros will be your best guide. Too often it is the vents (which, ideally, you should not hear anyway, even when they are working well!). The distance from the boiler and rate of venting is related. There is a nice e-booklet on this site about balancing using vents. The proceeds go to a good cause. It was written as a labor of love by some of the best.

If the building is one-pipe steam, thermostatic radiator vent valves (TRV's) such as Macon, Danfoss or Ammark (sp.?) with built-in vacuum breakers have merit to prevent over-heating and allowing the steam to serve better where needed.

Others have far more advice than this.
