Large steam pipe sizing help needed

The P.E. on the job sized the DHW load as requiring a 125HP temp. steam boiler. There an 8" suply and 6" pumped return. The plan is to cut in T's w/valves to segregate that system from the building heat. The P.E. is asking for a single 2" branch connection from the trailer. IF he is wrong, [which I believe so], I'll loose precious time to re-do. In my eyes, a 2" pipe is about 3 square inches, and an 8" connection is about 50 square inches. Do I need to match up 50 sq. in. in temp. steam? I'll have to check the existing pressuretrol settings and allowable pressure at the heat exchangers. Maybe I could build up the pressure. Would that be helpful?

I think you are getting the cart before the horse. The fact that a PE is on the job means he designed it and he owns it if you install it the way he specified. Discuss your concerns with him, put it in writing, and let him make the final decision...in writing. If it doesn't work, then you get a big fat extra, and we all know that extras are the most profitable part of any job. Let him bear the burden of decision, it's his stamp on the job.

    I'm not lookin' for that.

Al, I'm not interested in a few dollars more on this seven figure job. I do the right thing in the beginning, see the job thru, and get first dibs on the twin sister next year. I need someone to do the math and give an old timer an educated answer. If I'm installing the job, I do my own research and check important keypoints. I believe that in doing this my way, my credibility looks good. And I'm damn proud of my rep. At the end of another seven figure job, with six subs workin' for me, there weren't any items on anyone's punch list. That's what gets me referals and work.

If the full 125 Boiler HP is needed, that is about 4,360 PPH output. I see that as a 6" line, low pressure.

The 2" may be the pumped return (26 GPM at 3 x the condensing rate).

Talk to the engineer off-line privately and see what he says. Then follow up in writing.
