You said you went away for vacation. Did you by chance shut the burner off at the Emergency Switch? An older WM does not fare well if it is allowed to get cold and can cause a leak.

leaking steam boiler,time for a new one?

Need help on weil mclain steamer noticed yesterday that a light wiff of white smoke was coming out of my chimeny.It apears to be water vapour as the boiler starts to steam,water level is down about one and a half inches since I last checked it before I went on vacation three weeks ago. The entire system was installed from the ground up by an old timer in 1979, In 2005 I had major water damage to the house the heating system was the only thing to come through intact,damage was done to the header pipe when they put new support column in, this caused a leak where the pipe joins the boiler,the pipe was replaced and the leak stopped,could the stress have caused an internal crack or caused a gasket to leak? Since my service company of over 30 years has not returned my calls and seem reluxent to do anything I am looking for someone to do a repair or a new install,I am located north of Boston Mass. I would like to stay with oil but if worst come to worst I will deal with the dreaded key spam

It is possible but I would have thought the leak would have shown up right when the pipe was fixed. Good luck, Tim.

you need to add enough water to fill the boiler and look inside the chamber to se if it gets water in it really do not think a column repair could cause enough stress sounds more age related
