Or possibly the bleed port is loose. However,I agree with the blocked return line and defective pump seal is most likely.

I was working on a job. I installed a Oil fired water heater. It was a two pipe system. I turned the unit on it fired and was working. All of the joints were tight and there where no oil leaks. The bypass plug was installed. Oil began to come out of the bottom of the casing. So I shut the unit off. The blast tube had oil in it. The transormer had oil on it . It also looked like oil was spitting out of the pump. Could this be a pressure problem or do I have a defective burner.

The return line is blocked or very resticted, you blew out the pump seal

    um

Sounds like a loose nozzle, or loose connection from the pump outlet to the nozzle assembly.

Don't mean to offend, but I do not know how qualified you are. If not a professional, you MUST call one to set this burner up for safe, clean combustion.

Burners can be deadly in the wrong hands.

always check operation with a combustion analyzer to make sure of proper, safe combustion.

    I'll never forget

    Just finished a replacement.

Everything was working fine, I picked up my tool bag, and was ready to shut off the light in the boiler room...

Then I hear a wierd shrieking, and could smell fuel oil.

Aw fudge!!! I bent the return line with a tool that was sticking out of my tool bag, and kinked it. I was so tired (10:30PM) that I didn't care what was holding the bag down, I just pulled hard and kept going.....

Lets just say I was there for a while longer.

    Pump Seal

If it were the pump seal. I would just need to replace the fuel pump.

You would need to replace the pump, but first you must clear the return line.

Is there a valve in the return that you might have closed?
