Need a PEX UP THE WALLS expert
I need help. My 1926 Spanish Med. is steam heated and I want to move to forced hot water. Plenty of help and advice in the engine room. Not too much advice (expect for gutting the house) when it comes to HOW the hot water will get from the basement to the top floors. You guys talk alot about using PEX in floors. I want to use it as a substitute for copper in a gravity system...Can anyone help? Any contractors in or around New Rochelle, NY 10804 are who HAVE WORKED with PEX in this way? Thanks! 914-636-85800 -
I'm not anywhere close to you, I'm in Alaska...but I don't mind a little windshield time...I charge shop to shop.
Not all pex is created equal, watch the temp ratings and fittings. We've run tons of Wirsbo he/pex as heat lines for baseboard heat...we use the expansion fittings, not the crimp ones...never had a failure. Do isolate the tubing from wood structure, and allow for tons of expansion.0 -
Conversion
Keep talking to contractors , look for one that has done a number conversions from electric to HW.
we have done conversions for 20 years without having to do major destruction to a house..............
When fishing PEX up in walls be careful . We use a small camera or bore scope ..
You don't want PEX lying on Romex, Tstat , or phone wires.
It will brake down the wire coatings over a period of time and you may wish you pulled the walls
down when everything stops working.
T Stats and phones will stop working first , Then the electrical wiring.........
Romex only has a 90 degree C rating and it hasn't had that for very long. 10 or 15 years.......
Any wiring older that will cook fairly quick......
I am closer than Alaska but the windshield time would be a killer even from New Hampshire ........
Don't expect magic , but someone that has done a number of conversions
can get surprisingly creative in hiding pipes.......

pex i walls retrofit
We have done this a few times in large old frame houses. Our technique is to snake half or three-eights wirsbo through the walls and tie them into a B&G monoflo loop in the basement our first one was a three story multi-family in New Haven Conn 4 years ago and so far it has run flawlessly. The monoflow loops allow for th use of the saller pex which is demostrabley easier to work with.0 -

I'd suggest a PAP
or better yet the fostapex from Viega. it's a true pex dimension tube with and outer aluminum jacket and protective coating over that. a very rugged tube for fishing and jobsite abuse.
The aluminum based tubes will all but eliminate expansion noise or noise cause by squeaky outer layers on regular barrier tube.

Darrell,
Time to substantiate your claim....

Just curiostiy.
