    Problem Gas Valve?

Have any of you had any experiences with the following scenario?
My future Father in Law has a Magic Chef furnace, 1987 vintage, with a Robertshaw gas valve. The other day he had no heat, which I found to be the spark ignitor, which I replaced. Upon re-assembly the gas valve would not open on the main side. After removing the (main power) wire from the GV and tickling the contact with it, the GV rattled and opened. Sort of like jiggling the handle. I wrote this off as a by-product of being serviced. Guess what-here it is Sunday AM and I get the call-the pilot is lit, but the main rack won't go. The pilot will only light on a heat demand, so I know that the call is there. I would be skeptical about the GV itself, but it sure looks that way. Any thoughts?

    update

It just seemed odd to me that there were multiple problems from the beginning. Then again, all of the parts are the same age.
I went in with a voltage tester and found that the main valve is, in fact, getting 24 volts, yet not opening. A new one is on the way.
  • Make sure you check on the other

side of the valve as you could have a broken or intermittent ground connection. If you read 24 volts on both sides of the valve that is in fact a broken ground. Solution is to run a new wire to the common side of the transformer from the gas valve. If however you check and have 24 volts on one side of the gas valve and "0" volts on the common side the valve is in fact faulty.

    Uh,

I was recently told by a manufacturer that the life expectancy of a FA furnace is 20 years. This one is 19 or so?

How much $$$ do they/you want to put in it?
