I plan on posting a few pictures of an EK 1 I installed today when I have the time.

    SYSTEM 2000 from Energy Kinetics

I have a single pipe steam system in my New England house. It looks like someone built the entire system out of spare parts. Everytime I look at it something leaks. I want to rip out the entire system and install a new heating plant, hotwater baseboard in the basement, radiant for the first floor and hot water baseboard or miniduct system in the second floor.

The first contractor did not even measure up the space and immediatley reccomended the SYSTEM 2000 from Energy Kinetics. The next contractor measured the house, the windows and performed some calculations and came up with the same system. Does anyone have any experience with this system?

    Thanks in advanced,
    Bill

    SYSTEM 2000 from Energy Kinetics

    Hello Bill,
I had a System 2000 model EK-1 installed in our home on Sept 25.

I got 4 estimates and asked a lot of questions on this, and other, forums. The following link is from a gentleman up New England way who asked about converting from oil to propane..............The link to the thread that follows totally pertains to your question!

    Hope this is helpful.

    Best of luck!

    Howard
PS- I took all the measurements of my home and handed a sheet to everyone that came to estimate. Only the eventual installer, Bob O'Brien, did the calculations for the actual heat loss!

    don't throw...

the baby out w/ the bath water...why do you want to srcap it? can it be all that bad? Do some research and get your system repaired to the point of working properly...it will be a bunch less painful as to a rip out...kpc

    My Best Shot

    Thanks for the comments.

I really tried to fix the existing system. When I bought the house I figured all I needed to do was update the boiler. The oil fueled boiler is 25 years old and leaks everywhere. I replaced all the floor valves for the radiators that were stuck closed. I swapped out the vents and made sure the radiators had pitch. I tinkered with the boiler and got it to fire. Once I got all the radiators throwing heat, I realized why so many were shut down. Leaks everywhere! After giving it my best for 3 days I surrendered. The final blow is when my brother in law came over and told my wife, your house is 2,100 square feet, look at the size of that radiator (pointing to the six footer), image the space you will gain if you get rid of them.

    Thanks again,
    Bill

    You're on the right track!

Anyone who shows up and doesn't do, or ask for, a heat load calc. should have a large capital 'L' on his forehead.

However, anyone knowing the essential nature of having the heat load data, would logically be a candidate to evaluate the steam side of the existing system?

When you're a "wet-head," you tend to be aware and capable of doing radiant, steam or HWBB.

I urge you to use the "Find a Professional" search feature atop this website, to the right of the whittened "SEARCH" tab located at the extreme top-left.

    Could be an interesting resource.
